What to choose inline Fan to get

I need help choose the perfect inline fan for my 3x2x6 grow tent an 5x5x8 grow tent. What would be the best for these tent not too weak or too strong for these tents.

What i got in mind. Would these be too strong for my tent or 4in would be enough for 1 per tent

Word of advice. Don’t put either on a speed controller. Buy a multi speed before doing that. The 6” I run through an air cooled reflector is noisy. Effective and light. Easy to connect and hang but very loud.

Ok, growershouse has 10 inch vortex blowers on sale for like $114.

Grab one of them and a variac.

Then use the variac to slow the fan.

You can cover he fan with a box full of insulation to muffle the sound but any inline fan is going to be noisy running full out.

Bit overkill doncha think? A 6" at half speed should be plenty for his two tents. Can buy a cheapo 6" inline with built in speed controller online for $100. My no-name 6" works fine with the ceiling fan speed controller I got at Canadian Tire for $15 and installed in an electric box with cords.

Or get the Rolls Royce of inline fans and buy a Vortex 'S' series. S stands for sexay!

Canadian made and around $235 for a 6". This is the 8" but the 6 looks the same. Built in sound dampening and lots of other cool features but no speed control. Quick release clamps for the hoses is sweet. So is the 10 year warranty.

Those mixed flow fans don't fight static pressure losses well. The 10 inch vortex is overkill but it's an very high quality fan and run at a reduced speed you won't hear it. I have one on a 2x4 tent with a variac and it's so silent at reduced speed and it pulls a hard negative pressure.

The nice thing about overkill is you can turn it up if you have to.

Anyways, thats what I would do.

Here's the deal based on my experience.

AC Infinity fans are better than most fans.
Noise. Size. Weight. Variac equivalent speed control. Optional techno controller with display.

BUT. They are WEAK when it comes to static pulling power. Carbon filters....long runs...forget about it!!

I have the 6" with electronic display.
Very happy with it.
Freed up my Variac to use on my 6" scrubber.

I just like the ac infinity fan cause of it auto temp control. The temp outside the tent is around that 70s an in the tent haven't test haven't got any light for it yet still waiting. I feel it going be hot if I put a 315w cmh in it

AC Infinity with the new controler are quieter as the now divided it into 10 settings.

i have a 6 inch on a Phresh 6 in x 16 with 7 foot run and it keeps my 4x4 neg pressured
ive gotten use to the sound even with all my stuff running im only at 40-45 decibels

AC Infinity is having a 20% off w/ "Promo Code" so I just bought the 6 inch fan with AC Infinity 6 inch duct. Now I just need my lights I'm just gonna get Vivosun 315w CMH

If the fan CFM is greater than the filters recommended single pass CFM then you won't get good odor control. Basically the fan pulls the air thru the filter faster than the filter can clean it.

A 4 inch carbon filter CFM rating may be around 190 CFM and a 6 inch vortex brand fan has a rating of 497 CFM where a 4 incher would have 172 CFM.

So you can see the 4 inch fan and filter are a good match but the 6 inch fan would exceed the filter CFM rating by over 300 CFM.

A good tip a guy at a hydro store gave me was buy a filter with twice the rating of the fan and wrap the lower half with plastic wrap until the top half starts letting stink thru. Then wrap the top half letting the clean bottom half work.

As I run my 400cfm fan at half speed I bought a 600cfm Can-Fan from canfilters.com to do that with about two years ago. Still sitting in the box. Supposed to last 2.5 years when used as normal so if I ever get around to using it it should last a good 5 years. All sealed in plastic wrap in the box so still brand new.

No matter how you do it getting a filter with a higher CFM rating than the fan is the best way to go. Throwing away money if you go the other way as @Renfro correctly spelled out.

I already have a Temp/RH control for my exhaust fan so would want one with a built in speed control so I know it's designed to work properly with the motor in the fan. I have a speed controller plugged into the temp/rh one but I made the speed unit from a ceiling fan controller I bought and built into an electrical box with cords on it. Has worked great for a few years tho I have had to replace both the temp and rh controls. The RH one is a standard bathroom fan humidity controller and the temp one is a heat/cool thermostat wired on the cool side.

In case anybody wants to build their own temp/rh unit. In reality those inkbird units and ones like them are probably cheaper than what it would cost to make your own.
