looks just like a maturing stem to me. I have seen this on both MJ and Pepper plants. Seems that they start to get this near the flowering stage and on into budding. Then it starts to darken and then look like bark so to speak. never really got higher than 3 in up on any of my plants .

so to speak. It really depends on the maturity of the plant. The older it gets the more its going to look like this as well as travel up the stem. Its almost as if its the out most layer becomes thick to protect its self at the base. Added strength so to speak

other than visceral reaction - why kill it?

It doesn't seem to be hurting the plant, tried a bud and was good. Has about 4 weeks left to go.
It's the only plant in the grow tent - and i'd hate to just toss it.

Do you have anything to go on as to why it needs to be killed immediately?
scrape it off

I didn't know that it was your only plant. I thought maybe it was one of many, in which case killing a mystery bug may be advantageous.

Looks like the typical aging of your main stalk. The older they get to more hardened off the trunk gets, totally normal. Now I do see what looks to be soil and perilite stuck to it, but that can be just flicked off. My experience and your pics say normal stalk development.
