What should it look like?

I am just wondering what a healthy sprout will look like. My mango strains have just sprouted and they look fine to me. but there are variations in the color so if anyone can tell me what the signs of the healthy or unhealthy sprout are that would be awesome.

I also have a another problem the rest of my seeds that i tried to germinate didnt sprout. I put them in moist towels and they grew the first root but after that they would sprout. i got curious and dug one up and the root had melted kinda. what does that mean?

um a healthy sprout looks like any normal sprout. it might have a red stalk that'll change later. It should have (or will) have 2 round leaves (cotyledons) and most importantly, it should be growing up :P. I don't know what else to say. If it looks healthy, it's healthy. If the leaves are dying or the sprout has tied itself in a knot, then you have a problem...

im not quite sure what you mean by the root had melted kinda. and you shouldnt be digging up your plants if you want them to grow :P. just put them in soil and with an extremely diluted solution of grow nutrients every so often, give them lots of light and you should be fine.

Thanks for the help. How long should it be before more leaves start growing in? and is it bad for the plant if i turn the light off for an hour and then turn it back on?

you need more light(elongated), when they start to leaf-out they become top-heavy and fall over... i've got a couple like that rightnow... click on my sig link that should help, i have pictures of almost every stage of plant growth on it... and a lot of seedlings

what kind of lights are you using? seedlings stretch like yours because of lack of light. a quick fix would be to just get some cfl's and bring them within inches of the plant or either some hid lights to stop the stretching even more. if you want to fix it completely, you can gently lift your plant out of the soil and transplant it into another container while burying some of the stem. and make sure to get a fan to gently blow air on the plant so it shakes a little. the plant will respond by thickening its stem so it'll be sturdier. some support with some wire would be nice too.

you should tie them to one now and get tons more light in there. make sure if you're using cfl's the lights are about 2-3 inches from the tops of the plants. those are stretchin way to much. normally that sprout would only be about 1/2" to about 2" max.

cover them until an inch is showing and move the lights closer, they wont become top heavy again

One for each plant for now, if you are using CFL's for the whole thing, eventually you will want about 150W per plant, 3/4 2700 in flower, 3/4 6500 in vegging...
