What mulch are people using

I’m preparing my outdoor grow for this year and am thinking about covering the top of the soil to try and keep bugs and mould away. What do people put on top of the soil when growing. I’ve seen a lot of people cover there plants but there seems to be a wide selection.

Good old straw. Simple, effective, and cheap. Helps keep the top of the soil cool as well on hot days.

when you water to you try not to get it damp?

I water right thru it. Never had an issue. But I also allow my soil to damn near completely dry out before next watering.
