Hey there im just wondering what kind of lights i can use to sprout my seeds before i move them outside. It needs to be stealthy because my parents do not approve.

last year i bought a simple 60w lamp and used a single incandescent bulb that is supposed to be similar to natural daylight. heres a link
http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?D=901795&Ntt=901795&catalogId=10051&langId=-15&storeId=10051&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntx=mode+matchall&N=0&Ntk=P_PartNumber

This lighting worked, but the plants grew strange, the stems grew like crazy but the leaves did not the stem actually grew so much that there was about 2 inchs between each of the 3 first leaves. I know they shouldnt have grown like that the leaves should have grown more If i were using a better light.

What kind of light should i get for sprouting my seeds this time? preferably something that is easy to get like from home depot or canadian tire

+rep for the good answers

throw that POS incadescent out. Use Daylight (6500 K) compact florescents in a reflector, they are the best. keep the light an inch from the tops of your seedlings.

you need a cool blue CFL bulb. everywhere sells them, they could also be called "daylight" bulbs. It needs to say 6500k on it, that is the bulbs you need for veg and 2700k for flower.

you are doing a very similar thing that i am doing, i also live at home and am sprouting my seeds in a stealth closet box i can see if i can get some pics up of my box.

for a small stealth temporary grow you dont need an hps or hid light they are spendy and put out more heat than the CFLs do. CFLs will suit your needs perfectly.

Anything that gives off light and is used in growing. You can use a cfl or a metal halide or a high pressure sodium light, it'll all work. Incandecant however, no :D
Lol well i can say the incandecant did the job, they did sprout and grow enough for me to move them outside. But once i moved them outside the stems were so thin they just bent over and half died lol the other half i had to steak up to stop from dieing. But now i learned from my mistake and you guys gave me the answers i needed, thank you

That is called stretching. Basically the incandecant was not giving out enough usable light for the seedlings so they put all their energy into stretching up in a hope that they might find more light. Tis not a good thing for seeds as you appear to have experienced :)

also one thing to add to what frmrboi said, you should have the lights about 4 inches away from the seedlings for the first week, then after that drop them to about 1 inch
