This started last week and has seemed to be getting worse and spreading.

Bud rot.
Possibly cause by caterpillars.........you definitely have something chomping on it.

thats as mick said, bud rot , sorry man/woman cut it out as soon as possible , you may end up with some but, but its time to chop and trim ASAP
