What Is The Best Way 2 Start Seeds Outdoors?

I won't be able to start my babies inside this year and I want to know the best way to get them going. I had a problem with slugs and snails climbing in the pots and sucking the life out their little stems. I was using 2 liters with the top cut off. Is this too big?? It rains a lot around here and when I pick the pots up they are heavy from all the rain(the soil stayed drenched). How can I keep the seedling from getting to much water? Should I use smalle pots. Can I add sumthing too the seedlings soil mix to keep it from getting to wet? Any1 have a tried method that they used and had good results? Thanks for the help

I would use much smaller container for the scenario you describe.
16 oz styrofoam cups are great. Use a soil blend with lots of additional perlite... as this will tend to keep roots better aerated and not too soggy.
If at all possible germinate in paper towel or cheesecloth in a warm controlled dark place indoors...it doesn't take much space.
I would put the sprouted seeds into prepared containers outdoors.
If it's not too hot in your climate, and especially if it’s cool.....
What you can do with the 2 liter bottles is cut the bottoms off instead, and place them over your seedlings as heat domes and physical barrier to slugs, use the clear plastic type of course. You can leave the cap off of the top for ventilation. As the plants get bigger, if you want to keep using domes, simply dig a hole in earth big enough for the plants containers, gives a little more room.
In addition I would definitely get some slug and snail bait pellets also;these have worked best for me.

Thanks for the tips. Especially the one with the 2 liters. How do you keep the 2 liters on the plants without the wind blowing them off. Also I was on my way to the spot and seen some pinkish ribbins tied to trees. I also seen some orange ribbons tied to trees at my friends spot. Who put these up and what are they doing back here. This isn't a little patch of woods and it has a large stream that runs threw it.

The two liter bottles bottom rims should be pushed into the ground around the small container....this should stabilize it. It's a good idea with the small containers to dig a little hole to nest them in also,….. stops them from tipping.

Looks like there are surveyors in your area......seems prudent to pick some other location......better safe than sorry!
