What is going on here?

I have no clue as to what made this hole in the stem. Any help is greatly appreciated. The plant is kept in naturally grassy area were the grass is around 3'-3 1/2'. Area is pretty much wild foxes, deers, and all type critters. I expected some munched on leaves but never this. Should I cut stem, cull plant, or insecticides? CYMERA_20140516_163212.jpg

If you look up the stalk a little further, you'll see that there is another hole (smaller, but visible). You obviously have a pest problem. Since this is an outside grow, you need to do some research about how best to protect your plants from outside critters and pests. But, no, you shouldn't cut the stem! That's a last resort.

It could be caterpillars, or one of a dozen other things. Here are some links that might help you:
