what happened to my clone

I took a clone last wednesday and put it in damp rockwool cube in a propogator in my growroom and i have been keeping it moist but it seems to be dying ,its gone all limp ,what have i done wrong? i used rooting gel and cut it at 45 degrees
any help is appreciated especially as im now 95% sure that the plant it came off is a female

yes ,yes and no and i only pre soaked the rockwool in water for about 20 mins ,would that be enough to kill it?

Thanks for those good info for next time ,but it doesnt tell me if mine is going to be a gonner or what to try to save it

They often go a bit limp after you've just cloned them, it's nothing to worry about. What they need now is a little bit of moisture, a little bit of warmth and a little bit of light. Make sure you keep them under the humidity dome and continue to mist the leaves twice daily, and make sure the rockwool is moist and not sopping wet.
 
Use your pH pen and check the pH of the water coming off the rockwool cube. My guess is that you didn't flush the cube (flush. not soak) well enough and the pH is going through the roof/is too high for the plant to survive.

Beenthere, what difference does the ph make if the plant doesn't have any roots yet? It's not intaking any water or nutrients yet because it doesn't have any roots - it's taking in water through its leaves which is why it needs to be misted and kept in a humid environment to slow water transpiration.

The fresh cuts on the stem allow moisture to enter the plant. This is how it survives until it roots. (let the cube dry out if you don't believe me) If it's nourishing itself on water that is alkaline as hell..8 or above...it isn't gonna do as well as it would if the pH were in the optimal range for rooting clones... which is about 5.5-5.8.

Further down the line a few days...if the pH is out of whack it won't make any roots. Eventually the plant will stress and die. Sound familiar?

I've never misted a clone in my life. Dip n stick..dome em..and let em go. Misting tells em they DON'T need to make any roots because yer giving them what they want. It also encourages stem rot/mold.

I've seen this view expressed before and I don't agree with it, sorry.

I've had a 100% success rate with all my rooted clones so far and I've never ph'd the water once, all rooted within 10-14 days kept under a prop with a 20w energy saver as a light source and daily light leaf misting.

I think this is just one of those instances where people find their own way of doing things and stick to it.
 
you'll def get some transpiration from the cut of the clone. put some food coloring in the water you put on the rockwool or whatever you use, they suck it right up. hydrogen bonding and evaporation pull it up.

i also rarely mist mine, if they seem to be extremely limp i'll mist.

Yes.."whatever works for you" is always the best route to take, babygro.

7xstall... *If* I mist at all during the cloning process...I mist the top of the inside of the dome...not the plants. I only do this because I live in an area where the humidity is 25% or less most of the time.

In the end, I would advise inexperienced growers to steer away from rockwool for cloning and find something else to use that has no known pH fluctuation problems. I also think most folks keep their RW far too wet, encouraging pathogens and stem rot and slow or no root formation.
