I think he has some sort of internet TV show as well.

I listened to him for a while but he lost me when he started ranting that China had 98% of the rare earth elements on the planet. Yes, they were the supplier of them but there are areas of Canada and the USA that contain the same minerals. We just dont mine them there because the ones from China are so cheap.

I found that to be hype... Plus, I bought his book and he said if I read the first 5 pages I wouldnt be able to put it down... Had a hard time getting through the first chapter.

No, he wasnt correct. He stated that China had 98% of the minerals and they were going to embargo them.

There are deposits in other places in the world that make his scare tactics moot...

Beck has his own online broadcasting network and according to him, he is doing almost as well as he ever did. His followers have simply accompanied him in his rabbit hole world - not much different than the one he inhabited when he was above ground.


It is strange hearing folks reference it. GBTV (Glen Beck Television network) or geebeteeevie. Took me a week or so to figure out what the hell they were saying.

Seems like Andrew Wilkow is a major contributor.

Glenn Beck is an entertainer....he has been somewhat successful in his endeavor to build an alternative entertainment platform with the Blaze and GBTV, I have to grudgingly give the guy some credit for generating lots of cash flow with his unique blend of cornball histrionic material.

I most decidedly lean to the right on the political spectrum, and having listened to Beck for many years off and on (radio show), his show was vastly more entertaining before he achieved his notoriety. He is indeed a doofus, and his radio show is virtually un-listenable these days.Oh well.:blsmoke:

Okay, that’s not quite as weird as it sounds. Rare earth metals are crucial
for a wide range of electronics, from fluorescent bulbs to iPod headphones to
hybrid vehicles. And China
produces 95 percent of the world’s supply. So when
China began sharply restricting exports in 2010 — allegedly to give its own
industries an advantage — the global prices for rare earths skyrocketed. Bad
news.


And as I said before

So what happened here? One key thing to note is that, despite their colorful
name, rare earth
metals aren’t actually all that rare. At one point or another during the
twentieth century, Brazil, India, the United States and South Africa were all
major producers. It’s just that, in the 1980s, China decided to ramp up
production massively, driving out competitors and cornering the market. (China
managed to do this, in part, by going easy on environmental oversight of
mining, which can be a
horrifically dirty process.)

The rocks are full of rare-earth metals combined with iron ore, and the rare-earths are extracted as a supplementary process to the iron-ore extraction, making it the most productive source of rare-earths on the planet.
It is a source upon which the Western world has become dependent. In 2008, China supplied 139,000 tons worldwide, 97 per cent of the world's total rare-earth production.

I said I didnt like Glen Beck. I explained why I didnt like Glen Beck and used an example.

Glen Beck said that China OWNED 98% of the rare earth minerals. The truth is that China PRODUCES 97% of the total rare-earth minerals. They do that for one reason. THEY DO IT CHEAPER!!!

So, it is not that China has all the rare earth minerals and they could screw over the world. It is true that China digs them up dirt cheap (pun intended) and it is therefore stupid to try to dig them up somewhere else for more cost... Therefore it was not the fucking emergency that Beck implied it was.

Ultimately, my point all along has been why I dont listen to Glen Beck anymore and you have been doggedly arguing about REM...

Have I mentioned lately that you are an idiot?
