NRL is the National Rugby League in Australia,it is not rugby union and it is not NFL.

In my opinion it is the toughest and most skillfull league in the world,i encourage any gridiron fans to look it up. (look up nrl big hits on youtube).

2 Whole teams take the field (13 players each) with 4 on the bench. (12 interchanges allowed for the duration of the match,80minutes).

The finals are upon us and im a long time doggies supporter so what do u all think!?!

UP THA DOGS!

Nice to see another aussie on here, even if I am in Cali for now :P I highly dislike team sports, so no comment on the post itself :P

Can't compare. I understand rugby and don't like when people try and make comparisons, because its really not.

The NFL is a violent sport. You're talking guys running full speed with how many pounds of gear on nailing a guy who many times might not see it coming?

this is college football. Basically its 18-22 year old boys playing. That isn't the NFL where the game only gets faster and more high intensity. Look how violent and hard those tackles are. Its a vicious sport. Rugby is more soccerish in a way.

Rugby sucks. Yes I have watched it as well as Australian rules football. In whiny Australian voice "but we don't weeeeear pads" - exactly (because you dont have to) it is glorified soccer. I couldn't name one rugby player for a billion dollars. I would say 99.99999% of Americans couldn't name a team / player / league / how much a point is worth with a gun to their head.

Glorified soccer my ass.

To hobbes, firstly i dont see anything tough or manly about hitting a person whos not looking,in the NRL its 2 teams running straight at each other,no blindsiding, they know the collisions coming and they take it.

Secondly, the amount of stopages in an NFL game is ridiculous, whats the longest period of continual play, about 10 seconds?! please. Also the NRL doesnt have 1 team for defence and 1 team for offence, the team does it all for 80mins,the level of fitness in our game is far greater i think, also a much more skillful game..Ill try post a vid soon.

the ufc is the most demanding sport in the world.... imo... which counts for little..

but not many guys can get in a ring, beat the shit out of eachother for 25 minutes, and still be standing at the end....

rugby and football are in no way comparable tho...

completely different rules...

although the impact from a football hit is somewhat like getting hit by a car moving 20 miles an hour.... a rugby hit cant be more than a 17 or 18 mile an hour car.. bongsmilie

speaking of rugby.. its coming up on spike tv... right after UFC...

whether your talking about rugby or the NRL they still play rugby...

and i was just saying the ufc is more demanding than either the nfl or nrl... or (imo) any other sports affiliation

After playing both Rugby (15-man) and Football, I would say you are much more likely to get injured in Rugby. During 1 season I hyperextended both my knees at least 5 times each and finally partially tore my MCL. I think the best way to explain it is you have more "minor injuries" - concussions, hyperextensions, and knee strains than in football, where you hear of ACL and neck injuries more often.

In Rugby, you have to be a much better tackler - your form is much more important, and therefore there are probably less Knee/Neck/Spine injuries. You can't just lower your shoulder and chop a player out, you have to wrap him up.

I definitely miss playing Rugby more. Good thing it is slowly but surely gaining popularity in the US.

Rugby is cool. But it is hard to watch here. Its rarely on the Tele, aqnd there is not an organized league that I've ever seen advertise any local matches so I rarely get to watch it.
The stoppages in American Football are very annoying, but its fun to watch nonetheless .

And I'm no Yank. I'm from the south. We declared independence and then we lost The War of Northern Aggression to the yanks and have been an occupied territory of the Yanks ever since. Damn Yankees.

I only used yank to grab ppls attention,i remember there was an american rugby league team that played in either the world cup or the super 8's,they werent very good we beat em like 70 nil or sumthin,it was funny though they put on a big hail mary gridiron play (forward passes are illegal though).
Also in the late 80's the aussies played an exhibition state of origin game in the US (Long Beach i think) only about 15,000 ppl turned up.Obviously it didnt catch on.

I figure that you can compare the 2 games League & NFL,

both games are great, but wearing all that protection in NFL is overkill since we do it without any, only a mouth guard....

I'm American, just figured I would say that before I say my piece.

I played both competitive Rugby/Football in High School.
To begin with, you can't really compare the two - Football is about power and speed, with some technique. Rugby is about technique with some power and speed on the side. I say this because in Football you can basically tackle someone any possible way (other than face mask/horse collar) without a penalty. In Rugby on the other hand, you have to wrap up and make a "legit" tackle, or else it is a penalty. This is the main reason you don't "need" pads in Rugby, because if you don't tackle properly (also the proper tackle in football) there is a smaller chance of getting injured.
Despite saying this, I will list my injuries over my two "careers" in both sports:
Football - 2 Knee Hyperextensions
Rugby - Too many Knee Hyperextensions to count, too many ankle sprains to count, 1 concussion (I actually did this to myself, got hit awkwardly and somehow managed to knee myself in head), and 1 partially torn MCL.
Cardio-wise: Football can't even touch Rugby. You get maybe a 30 sec break every 5-10 mins. You also play both offense and defense, so there isn't much time to stop thinking/moving.
I love both sports, but you can't argue one is "better" than the other. We, as American's don't really play Rugby, and they, the rest of the world, don't play football.

Sorry to not mention Aussie Football, but I just wanted to throw that out there, and I don't really know all the rules to it yet either.
