I dont know enough about your grow to know if it were stress or just genetics.
Could have been both or either.

I recommend taking pics through out the entire grow, to keep track of what went right and/or wrong.
Plus if you have problems, you can show us and it will make it easier to solve a problem... if you didn't already know
I kinda figured this was a lighting problem. I'll try keeping pictures with the next grow.

It looks like an HPS bulb.
The reflector looks dirty, that costs you some light intensity, which would have helped for bud density. If you got some coin I'd buy a nicer reflector, or if this is going in your box you'll probably need to do some sort of cool tube.
How big of an area is that 400 covering? Too big a space also will lead to less dense nugs.
You need to pheno hunt through some quality genetics, get some mothers, then get those dialed in.

Yeah you're going to need to air cool your 400 in that small of a space. Your plants may be getting too close to the light as well.
How do you air cool it? Just fans?
