What causes non-purple weed to turn purple??

So I got these 2 Black Jacks that are turning purple. One is very purple at about 12-13 weeks the other is a little purp at 11. So, I know some doobage is purple due to genetics but what else cause this?? Cuz I dont think this normally turns purple. I still have some clear, and some white trichs so I know its not way over flowered. It is beginning to get into the 40's 50's at night.

Is this just a sign of maturity? Cold? Nutrients? Does it effect the high?

I believe it's the drop in temps that can cause purpling. I'm not sure how else the purpling effects the plant (high, potency, etc) but it's definitely cool to see.

Low temps is what I would bet on. Not sure how it effects quality but people will pay more for color because it is rare.
Good luck with it.

Two things cause purple - genetics and temperature. Temperature is not always a guarantee if you want to force purple shades in your plant...

+1. If the strain does have the purple pheno, dropping the temps during the dark hours is a great way to bring the purple color out even more.

I always bring temps down during the last few weeks in flowering. Around high 50's F
and not just for the 'purple' color. Most strains will hue to different colors when you do it. So i do it all the time to see what it brings out.
I've had most strains turn to a purple hue and some to a bluish. Strains that dont turn , there leafs usually do.
Obviously if its a strain known to turn purple , they will look very pretty when you further it by dropping temperatures.
Just my opinion. I like a good looking plant and even if its just a different shade of green its good enough for me.
Ive only done this with Northern Lights - Hashberry - Skunk X's- and a handful of blueberry x's my buddy bred with peak genetics.
Also seen tons of others grows when they applied this teq and getting some beautiful colors

its not caused by temperature as such but more the drop in temperature during night time.
doing this makes the pigment in chlorophyll go, which bring out the other pigments in the buds.
you'll only get purple if there are the purple pigments in the plant.(i.e. if the strain has the genetics to go purple)
however some strains are really cool and have other pigments that are brought out like reds and blues.

purple is not an indication of getting a higher yield or potency, but, well, it looks damn cool :D

Thanks for the answers guys. From my experience you are right on. Of course, at night the temps drop and somedays I swear I can see a change by the next morning. Every night more and more purple.

One thing I can say though, in my experience purple always seems to be harsher(makes me cough more/easier) which always tends to jack you up more..anyone agree
on purple being harsher in general ?

i find it the contrary. none of the purples ive smoked made me cough. people do tend to cure purple strains more than non-purple because of flavors and most rush out other buds in a week or two in curing, when a month is optimal.
