Well Canndo, I am done with cakes! What now?

Hey hey brother! I am officially done with cakes after this current grow. All the damn fanning and misting and blah blah is getting annoying. I also HATE perlite, ugh. What method should I use next? Im thinking monotub? I want to do bulk and this seems the easiest way from what I have been reading, figured id drop by here and see what ya thought? Any other people please feel free to give me opinions

I'm beginning to think about setting up a tote again too . Been reading various things the last few days. My last set up was basically a SGFC, with WBS spawn, put into lasagna trays. It was an ok set up, but certainly not GREAT I don't think. I'm really thinking about doing the popcorn this time which I think is what Canndo promotes, but I could be wrong. I gotta get a new PC before anything else, I seem to have lost my last one I bought .

time for bulk.

there is a passive air system or you could use a plenum.

do a few dozen jars and spread the colonized grain into trays, three inches deep, maybe four, then case.

get that under your belt then go professional with manure or straw. My Tec can be modified to get you partway there

BRF TEK is shit! I use organic rye. I had some non-organic rye and it was pretty bad. I dont know what else was in it, but the label said that 3 grains were ran through the same mill and it was mixed in a small %.
Anyways, bulk is way better for a few reasons. Grain to grain transfer is the best reason!

Thunder I was also looking into trays for bulk. Canndo what do you think of a setup like this, can it be used for bulk or is it basically another sgfc type Pod?

Thats similar to how I set up my last one JJ. Rather then the air stones on the bottom, I had an air stone the ran into a jar with distilled water in it and holes in the lid. The fresh air pumped into the water to build humidity and I believe help filter and baddies out, and then pushed out the lid into the chamber forcing the fae.

i hope you all dont mind me sticking in a random question in here but ive tried using popcorn but my jars always look too wet
even after drying popcorn over night.
now ive moveed to rye, ive read on here its trickier to get moisture right with rye, well i have got it just right
its also way cheaper then popcorn where i live.
question is,

do i have to have some sort of gas exchange with rye as it takes longer to colonize, everywhere i read about rye jars
they all have some sort of gas exchange on their jars ?

ive innoc about 12 jars , all looking ok so far but i have no exchange ... am i setting myself up for a massive fail

Are you talking about gas exchange from the lid? I use pillow case stuffing in a hole of my lids. Easy and cheap. Not my own pics.

His jars look bad anyways... Bad example! I doubt the trouble came from the lids anyways.

read my sticky and learn about exchange in jars. If you only fill your jar half full, you will need no air exchange.

Popping corn in jars and then added to 1/2" Coco coir layer with 1/4 inch vermiculite underneith and on top. Using Dubtub tek with Popping corn basically.

soak for 24 hours, strain. put in 5 gallon bucket. add a couple gallons boiling water. cover. strain after 90 minutes. rinse. pressure cook for 90 minutes.... cool in pressure cooker for at least 2 hours... cool out of pressure cooker until cool to touch. Then innoculate... I only use the jar lid and tyvek lid (priority mailing envelope) and cover the syringe hole with micropore paper tape. Fill jars between 2/3 and 3/4 full.

although I like a proper casing layer as it will encourage even the more sparse varieties to fruit prolifically, this layering method should work ok.

about the only issue might be the coir. Some have great difficulty with pure coir. I know I do and I have to go through some steps in order to ensure I don't get early contamination.

the last thing I grew that needed casing were shaggies and I got contamination at the beginning of the second flush.

some coir is innoculated with tric. I have found that using the finest coir and then sifting all of the twigs and sticks out of it helps a lot.

as I have said. I have never gotten a pure vermiculite casing layer to work no matter the coarseness
. But if I use as little as one part in ten of some other woody material it all works. Of course, as little as one part in ten will invite contamination as much as any other ratio.
