Here is a great thread on the subject

5. Underwatering - not only is the plant now stressed due to a low supply of adequate moisture, but carbohydrate production has been greatly compromised (screwed up). Step up the watering frequency, and if need be, organic growers may need to soak the pot from the bottom up until moisture levels reach an even consistency throughout the medium especially with mixes that are heavy in peat. If severe, a little surfactant (liquid Ivory dish soap) added to the drench will help return the organics back to a normal moisture retentive state. If the pot feels light to the lift - it’s time to water. Don’t wait until the soil pulls away from the sides of the pot or leaves droop before you water.

AGAIN. if you TOUCH it, it isn't going to make it STRONGER, it MAY take c02 or have special feelings to your touch that triggers a faster growth rate, But it doesn't build cell walls
"Plants subjected to thigmomorphogenesis, or physical disturbances such as wind and touch, generally respond through reduction in the rate of stem elongation and shoot height, and they increase in stem diameter. All of these features result in the formation of short, stocky plants."

Wouldn't increased stem diameter result in a stronger woodier stem?

And...

"The absence of physical disturbance also promotes formation of long cells with thin cell walls. These modifications result in the development of slender stems, which are not adapted to the buffeting provided by the wind outside"

I still love science.

not if it's weak on the inside, first hint of weight and it could fall over. Air movement is absolutely needed for respiration and transpiration, but any plant I have seen with constant air on it gets windburnt

Hey I'm I new grower and I've had a problem happen to me multiple times. Around the mid to end of the 2nd week of planting the sprouts will begin to fall over and grow at an awkward angle. Their stems also seem to be really weak??I'm not sure if this is a stem problem or what?? I'm using a grow tent with some lights that a friend gave me. And I water really only when the soil looks to be drying up. Please help!
I've found this, it maybe calcium deficiency, however there is a lot of good advice from others on here, so I don't want to give you a bum steer.
Read this and check out your plants symptoms against the list.
Best of luck...:leaf:
