Watering your plants-Does water type make a difference?

Im wondering how everyone here waters there plants? I have always used outdoor collected rain water since I grow outdoors. This year has been exceptionally dry though and Im really getting tired of buying spring water or filling up filtered water from my fridge. I was told not to use tap water because the chemicals are bad for the plants growth. Is this true or have i just been creating 100x the amount of work for no real reason?

I've used nothing but tap water for decades without issue.
Whoever told you that tap water is bad for plants doesn't know what they're talking about........if you can drink it, so can your plants.

i just want a smarter grower, not a confrontation about tap water.
not all water supply companies are equal. you can actually contact your local water supply company and request an analysis of their water. they are legally obliged to give you one within 5-10 days (it varies), they usually mail it. You need to be a local resident tho, can't be some joe schmoe looking for kicks. Some of those reports will give you shivers up your spine, be prepared to be shocked.
