Watering Question

Hey all, been searching for ages about this and looking for some opinions.

I've got some clones transplanted 3 days, total 17 days now from clone. About 6/7 inches and growing well, they are in 3 Gallon pots and will finish in those too. Im using soiless mapito mix

My question, I'm having a debate about watering.

I think we should water till there is a small run off, roughly 1/1.5 litres of water when they need it.
Friend says just to water around the stem about 500mls and that should be fine till they get bigger and need more.

I cant find an answer or even any opinions on this one so anything is better than nothing :p

i rarely grow in soil anymore. but when i did/do, i always allowed for some run-off when watering/feeding. what this does, is help wash out built up nutes, that naturally acquire when you feed. i started out doing a feed/feed/flush routine. allowing for run-off, eliminated the need for flushing until the end. (which some folks don't do at all.)
