You didn't knock first....
I had the same situation ( I've got lots of these ) with a black widow about three years ago. She lived down in on of my irrigation underground junctions, where I needed to turn a valve every day.
It did get to the point where I simply "knocked" twice on the lid...waited two seconds and lifted. She would move out of the way every time. We bumped on several occasions.... no bite. I even got my Mom to do it when i was away for awhile. She just had to see me do it first. Then she had the TRUST. No problem. That went on for a year before she disappeared. (not my Mom, the spider).
It can be done, in different ways, with almost all creatures large or small.
