This thread is being posted out of utter importance to those who are experiencing bug problems. I recently did some research on getting rid of spider mites which were infesting my soil and plants. Turns out I came across a home-made remedy on the internet that became appearant to me throughout several sites. The remedy was as follows; 50% Isopropyl Alcohol, Dishwashing Soap and Water

So I followed this formula and unfortuantel it gave me a whole shitload of problems! Do not try this! Seriously! I sprayed the outside, bottom and rim of all the pots. Next I sprayed the top layer of soil and then I sprayed the underside and above-sides of my plants. Well it definitely destroyed whatever bugs may have been living in there, but at the same time it almost killed my plants! I will post pics of what my plants looked like after my formula was applied! All the plants wilted down and dried up(didnt die though) also all the leaves are blotching with rust color spots and appear as a really really bad Magnesium Defficiency.. ok so heres the pics

As you can see, all the lower sets of sun leaves have dried up and appear to be Magnessium defficient! This is the result of the home-made formula! My plants havent died off and are still producing further growth at the top, so I'm hoping this wont have too much more of a negative effect on my plants! If you are experiencing bug issues please go to a store and use an insecticide soap or order it off the internet! I can't possibly stress this anymore! If you are having bug problems... be smart and use a product made to kill pests instead of a home-made remedy! Later!:peace::peace::peace:

Sorry for your damage caused by the alcohol. Alcohol in that strength has to be used carefully on anything and is way too strong to use on growing organic tissue (i.e. your plants). Next time try something like All Natural Mite & Insect Control for about $10 for a 32 oz. bottle or Neem Oil, Safer BioNEEM or Organocide. There are a lot of products available at your hydro shop or Lowes, WalMart, KMart, etc. that you can use that won't cost you an arm and a leg.

Good luck.

You were on the right track but went a little to far with your combo mix. First the alcohol evaporates very quickly by itself or when mixed with water. However when you mix it with soap the alcohol bonds with it and doesnt let it evaporate as quickly. Also when you spray the soil the alcohol soaks into the dirt. Once again not evaping like its suppose to. The alcohol should be mixed with water 50/50. Lightly spray the top and underside of the leaves. Then lightly spray the dirt. Not enough to soak in. The spray will kill mites instantly. Its not a additive just a quick fix. I hope that helped out a little. I use the mixture myself and i have never had a problem
