So if I do one box for veg and flower all I gotta do is switch the light cycles and types of lights at the correct times? I know there's more to it but as far as lights

I think if you growing for your self 150-200 bucks is enough money to start growing. I spend for my grow 70 eur thats 90 dollars , its a 150W HPS sistem . 40eur for ballast, ignitor and bulb, 5 eur for 5 x 120mm pc fans with 60cfm airflow, 5 eur for 2 x 2.5 gallon buckets, 5 eur for mylar foil, 5 eur for 20L of soil with perlite and vermiculite, 5 eur for fertilizer and i made a box from wood boards i had at home, and i made reflector by my self. Yea and a 6 eur for ph test. Thats 71 eur, if i go for 250W the ballast and the bulb would cost me 15 eur more, so i would still be under 100 eur , thats under 150 dollars.

edit: I forgot cables and bulb socket thats another 5 eur for me

I know you guys are gonna give me a hard time for this but I think I might go with cfls for my first time, but also trying to save money I saw a good thread on a cheap diy grow box basically just outta card board lined with tile and Mylar then sealed with duct tape and weather stripping, can that set up be successful? Or would that not hold up to good?

CFLs that will give you buds like a HID light cost more than a HID setup.
They are a pain in the ass to cool, pain in the ass to move all the time (and you need a lot of that) and the buds never get as dense meaning much lower yield.

Card board is flammable and rots in high humidity, do you really want to build a box out of it?
It should be hard to track down a closet in the dumpster, or a few doors, or anything you can build a box with a door out of.

You shouldn't care about how many plants are there but rather how much BUD you'r getting.
You can grow a single plant under a 1K light (or 4K light, seen that once) and get a huge yield. You could grow 10 plants in beer cups and get less than an ounce in the end.
With a 150W HID light you should aim to get around 80 grams or semi-dense high quality buds. Shouldn't be hard to get that.
With 150W of CFL you would be lucky to get 60 grams of fluffy as hell buds that is coated to no recognition with trichomes but lacks in potency and taste.

Also look up how many CFL grow logs actually finish with buds compared to HID grows.

I'm still saying you'll be better off outdoor.

Have fun with that info and whatever you decide to choose :-)

As a newbie myself :)

I figure it to spend 2-300 @ to start is Good. If it is a hobby, trust me to perfect & better yourself @ it you have to have an open mind about investing more into it.
I started out with plant lights from home depot, 1 plant.. & DIY bubble bucket.. Spent 50 bucks and 2months to get a male plant..
I then moved onto spending 500 bucks on a 600w air cooled hood + blower fan to cool + soil pots and basic nutes.. was not satisfied..
I doubled the lighting and soil, pots.. another 500 bucks.. was not satisfied.. was then I realized I needed to perfect my environment..
I now have built a makeshift sealed room for 100 bucks, & plan on spending another $2000 on keeping a stable environment.

(mini-split AC is the ONLY way to go if using co2 & you want it to be effective 100%.)
