Vertical bulbs are best used in open areas as bare bulbs. Most of the light goes sideways and no reflector loss is required to hit plants placed around the lamp.

I was just looking at the HLG 550 v2 at the local shop. It seemed to produce a bit more heat then I was expecting. I think I can get a good price on them but I wonder what the heat load would be with say 8 of them in an enclosed room.

Would it be comparable to running 1000’s?

if i had to guess, roughly 4000 watts (moving drivers outside room if possible would help) is about 12k btus. so an A/C maybe?

I ran one with the Phillips bulb last winter in a 2x4, nice light. Got about 1.1 GPW from 2 huge autos in coco / floranova. Tent is in a small room with bad airflow so it runs a bit too hot, switched to QBs. Plants under QBs in coco are so hungry for cal and mag, didn't have that problem with CMH.

Hood size. These are the largest 315w vertical bulb reflectors I've seen.
18x18. Huge compared to my lil neutron 11x13 horizontal.

You can't air cool a parabolic hood so the heat will be the issue. You also lose too much vertical space IMO.

Get a good vented hood, put a 1kW HPS in there and start pulling 2+ pounds a pop.

A SE 1kW HPS is ideal for a 4x4 area in flowering. If you aren't getting a gram per watt with a good yielding strain then you are doing something wrong.
I like cool tubes in tents, seems like they need more air filtering though, mine seemed to get dusty inside or maybe catch more dust than a flat glass. With the horti filter.

I have to question why some of these fixtures orient the bulb horizontally when the bulb was designed to be run vertical.

I wish I had done ALL the research instead of letting my budget totally dictate everything... I mean I would have never chosen a horizontal design... Now when I look in my tent.. I be like this shit ain’t even right...back to the “How much does your grow cost”...thread.
I’m not for any particular kind of light as oppose to the right lighting... one minute a 600hps is overkill for a 3x3... 315 would be better.. then in the real world I see a lot of people using a 600.. I’m older, maybe all the weed I smoked back in the day I loved where grown under hps... that’s all was around.. they wouldn’t be totally covered In trichomes & sparkling.. but would be rock solid..& I stayed hi..

I’m not into yield before fundamentally getting the crop right first..if I’m less a couple zips.. no big deal, as long as the end product was worth the wait...@least I got some Phillips bulbs.. ain’t gotta buy them again...

don't be too hard on yourself. you got a good light. there would be 2 things that you could do to make the most of it:
1. try to keep your canopy as level as you can for the 3x3 thru training.
2. if you think you need more light, add some strips as side lighting.

with that you should get 1.5 gpw eventually which is pretty much a pound every grow. so cheer up mate!! 4 lbs a year aint' too shabby.

This thread is pretty old but as a small update I went ahead and went with the BLI 315 cmh.

To see what’s up I replaced 6 1000w with 15 of the 315’s. Plants have been in the room for a week or so and ha e recovered from the transplant. So far I am stoked on what I am seeing but time will tell.

I went ahead and made a grow journal to follow the results of this change.

It is in the grow journal category.
