Very New Need Help

I am just starting the whole growing scene, and I don't have much to work with yet, but hope to continually improve lol.

Anyways, as of right now I have two 48" 40 watt florescent lights. I know these aren't exactly the best lights, but will they work? Also germinating a few random seeds right now of which I don't know the strain. Any advice as to what type of soil to use?

And if someone could help me with the "feeding of the plants" like when to do it? What to use? etc. Thanks for the help.

First the lights:

CFL's are actually very good. Are they 6500K rated lights? Should say on the box how many K's they are. This is VERY important.

Second the plants:

How many plants are you growing under those lights?

Third the soil:

I would get Pro-Mix brand soiless soil, most growers use this and it's sold in all grow-op stores and works great for beginners. It's about $15 or $20 for a good size bag. I got like 80L for $30.00, which is a HUGE bag.

Fourth feeding your plants:

You won't need ANY nutrients until the plants are bout 3 or 4 weeks old, but they also sell many types in your local grow-op store, grab some when you get your soil. The store owners are quite knowledeable and will tell you what you need. But for now all they need is...water, light, and oxygen to thrive. You will also need Distilled Water to water them..DO NOT USE TAP WATER. You can buy distilled water at Wal-Mart or any grocery store. Jugs are about $1.50 for 4 litres of water, very cheap.

The bulbs are 3000 Lumens and 4100 K temp. Is this ok? Thanks for the help.

Also, I right now I have 2 plants in the seedling stage. How many plants as the most would you recommend?

that wud work for now..but would need more eventually if using cfls ur guna need atleast a 100w bulb 6500k

Generally, people use the 6500K lights (daylight) to veg and the 2700K to flower i believe. I'm not saying yours won't work, it's just something to think about. Good luck!

if u you use a 100 watt cfl for veg u will be good

The most you could put under those lights is 2 plants, but you still need to replace them with 6500K (daylight) bulbs. The 4100K probably won't work well and will be a waste of time.

this also all depends on how big u want ur plants to get and if ur guna bring em outside..cause if u are u cud use a 3000 k ..and it wud grow big enough to put outside...

Yea I don't really have the money for new lights right now so I think I'm going to try to veg with these and then transplant to outside for flowering.

I've used those 48" shop lights before and they worked fine for my first grow, vegging. But I changed to the spiral cfl's because the shop lights are so long that you can't really utilize all of it's light to the maximum. I'm using the spiral cfl's and I can point it down directly on my plant and utilize every bit of light it has to offer, ha.
