I am trying to help a friend improve his setup and I have a concern about the condition of his roots. He is running a homemade type system using 4"x4" PVC square tube to hold the 6-8 plants. I have had him add a few airstones to his 15 gallon reservoirs(which I suggested he use a larger res), and switch to GH 1-2-3 just because this is what I run. He runs his pump for 1 minute every 5 minutes. His PH is 5.9 and PPMs around 1200.
I noticed when he removed the lid to his reservoir that his roots seem to be extremely fine and hair-like (at first I thought they were mushy and rotting, but other than no airstone the res looked fine). I also noticed one of his old tubes had dried up roots in them and you could crush the dried up roots in your hand and turn them to powder/dust. I run ebb & flow and my roots are like spaghetti noodles even after I harvest and the roots are dried, but he tells me that his are supposed to look like that because its Aeroponics.
I tend to think the roots might be overwatered because his root base reminds me of moss or something you would see in a swamp. I have done a fair amount of searching for pictures of roots in a system like his, but they all look like noodles and nothing I found resembled "wet hair" like his.
Can anyone running a setup like this confirm that roots in aero are considerably thinner/finer than E&F or DWC? Any links to pics of roots spilling from the tubes into the reservoir would be helpful as well.
