Vertical growing with LED?

Hey guys. I did a few vertical runs back in the day with 1k hps lights. Had phenomenal results.

Wondering what lights you guys are using now a days?

A quick google search doesn’t show much vertical lights options in led. Reading also not good to hang these horizontal led lights vertically.

Thoughts?

Not really a point in vertical led that I can see, led doesn't have reflector losses like hps does.
I always assumed it was to grow bigger flowers down low. I don't remember ever hearing about reflector loss. I would assume this is also why so many people add side lighting in flower no?

Well yeah it does that too I guess lol. Yeah people use side lighting led, under canopy too is a thing now.. I tried under canopy years ago but didn't get any results, I was using lower powered leds tho. You need to be using at least veg strength lighting under canopy to make it worth it. I just harvested my second crop with under canopy lighting and the bottoms were definitely larger, they were about the size of what you would normally get just below the top colas.

Vertical 360 degree stadium setups make full use of the HID bulbs, all the way around without any reflectors BTW.. You could have a few cool tubes hooked together like one tall one to suck away the extra heat if needed, and only be losing maybe 10 percent through the tube glass if your not bare bulbing it... Probably the most efficient way to grow?

Suppose you could do the same with LEDs too, and go vert. With vertical panel fixtures, or even make a long corn cob like tube LED fixture, and do a 360 stadium grow same way as with the HID bulbs if you wanted to. Or take a newer bar style light apart, and put them all together in a cylinder shape, with the diodes pointing outwards.

I think it might come down to assembling it myself like you said. Reading up and those panels are not good vertical. Have thought about just going back to hps but don’t want to deal with the heat.

I was thinking it would be a fun experiment to buy a 6 or 8 pack of these newer transformable garage style LED fixtures, and stack them all into one long vertical grow tube. Then surround it with the canopy all the way around. There isn't a way to dim them, and they do get pretty warm, but you could switch off every other one, and tilt the leafs to different angles to lower the intensity or focus more on other areas down lower that need it more..

Or with a cage around it instead. "COG" style ;)

Damn dude that’s killer. Whatcha think the cost will be? What’s the wattage look like on these?

Cobs usualy penetrate much deeper. Smd led cips dont penetrate as deep but due to led builds and aranging many together across a large flat surface, enough are there to get 2-3 ft of good pentration downwards but mainly across ward. So im not sure how verticle would work as you can get cobs lensed up to penetrate 2 meters ( and much more)and hold a huge ppfd at the bottom of the 2mtrs still. But having a corn type led amoungst the centre of plants im not sure would be the most efficent way to use led lighting. Verticle growing was done in response to try to get the best out of a inefficient bulb shape in restricted areas. With the advancment in getting past the ineficiency of the cylinder bulb shape with modern led i would think that way of growing verticle with a cylinder bulb in the midle of plants is obsolete now. You could however try mounting a cob over ever cylinder arangments of plants fited with the right lense with 60° spread outwards but holds huge ppfd downwards for 2 mtrs wich would probably work. You could probably do that with a 150 - 200 wat cob and with the right lense might be able to get similar results to using a 600 wat let in a cylinder with 2 cobs one 150 wat from the floor and 150 wat from the roof would defo give you similar results to a 600 in a cylinder.Try it , as the light can be beamed in a perfect cylinder as tall and as narrow as you want. Would be good to see the resuts of a cob viticle grow vs a corn light style led grow. Ive seen masive 7 - 8 ft plants grown inside with lensed cobs the plants can get big especialy when multiple cobs are used in a fairly decent sized room with high cielings. Should be a cool experiment to see.

Which ones did you go with?
I went with these because they work with my controller. I also have a 4 set of their UV lights in the top of my tent facing down. I have the UV's running 5 minutes every 60 minutes.

I have these on the 4 tent poles level with my grow. I zip tied them to prevent them from sliding down.

check black dog lighting saw a custom eight sided light that would need plants all the way around , the led vert thing i have no idea

Oh I like these. Maybe even better than a traditional vertical grow.
