How do I determine what these ducts that lead out to the roof are connected to?

It seems there is only one when I'm in the attic but I can see a few when outside looking up there..

I just don't want to mess with one that has anything to do with the furnace or anything else complex or important.

My attic stays 100 plus degrees with high humidity and no problems it's open to outside

I would use a 5" hole saw so it's a tight fit for the 6" ducting this will stop the ducting falling or moving about. Just put a pair of tights over the ends of the ducting and your good to go pal

You want a snug fit to help seal the hole in sheet rock

Well my house has ducting for fart fans in bathrooms, vent for stove and if you don't have a ridge vent they could have made holes for heat to escape

I have the same exact setup, here is what I did. Cut hole top of closet, vent wtih PC fan (12 volt) use any 12 volt charger cable to power up PC fan ( i use a charger cable i had laying around that charged up my cordless hand held vacumm - dirt devil), 4" dryer duct - home depot,connect one end to bathroom exhaust AFTER bathroom exhaust fan very important the other i have a panty hose over end of duct slip on a 4" sheet metal coupling and connect to the top of closet outlet.
Thats how i set it up, PC fan sucks exhaust out my closet into discharge duct of bathroom exhaust DOWNSTREAM of bathroom fan, that way bathroom fam does not have to be on for it to work connect your ductwork from the closet as close to exit of the house.
1. You wont create blow back when bathroom exhaust is on.
2. When you do use bath room exhaust fan it will create whats known in my business a venturi action.

I know what i speak of i'm a retired HVAC tech ( heating, ventilation and air conditioning).

If you dont have a nearby exhaust you have plumbing vents to connect to.
This is for a small grow nothing big,
2-3 plants max. Room where closet is located has central air so air is positve pressure goes under closet door into closet or crack open door for more air if needed.
Doing NL, AK 47 and 48 grow.

This is my first grow. But I think i'll do ok did tons of research first im confident mistakes are going to be kept at a minimum but i will make mistakes, of that im sure.

There are four large square capped vent holes along the top of the roof.. I have a bunch of fart fans in the house too.. I wonder where they go. Upon further inspection there are some black plastic pipes but they are maybe 3" or less..

Those black PVC pipes sticking out your roof are vent pipes for plumbing thats what you can connect to if no other vent is available.

BTW venturi action is most associated with liquids, but the science behind that affect also works on airflow.

Well if you can't tell by the area they are coming into the attic they this might help.... for the most part any duct coming from the furnace will be a 6 inch duct.... and a fart fan may be a four inch.... if they are all the same size just simply turn on your furnace and go to the attic and listen to the ducts.... then turn on each fart fan to determine witch one is witch.... and take a Sharpe with you so you can mark each duct so you never have to do this again.... hope this helps.

Heck if u want you can just tie into one of your attic vents.... all those do is let your attic breath.... if you have four taken out one of them will be no big deal....

As I stated before the black pipes above the roof line are for plumbing the 6" silver pipe topped off with a chinese cap or revolving mushroom cap are from your furnace.

The black pipes are 2 1/2" schedulued 40 PVC thats tied into your drain lines in the basement do help with water flow drainage. Ever tried to drain water from your car radiator when you open the drain plug the water trickles out, but open the radiator cap and the flow increases, its the same principle.

The reason you dont see them until you look up out side the house is because its buried behind the walls of the house during construction. There is also a white PVC 5 - 6" pipe that vents out at the basement line that one is for Argon gas emmision. Only the furnace pipe goes straight up through the roof line. If you can see the black PVC in your attic to prove my point open a faucet go to your attic and with a hollow tool (nutdriver) place one end to the pipe the other to your ear and you'll haer the water flowing, you can use a scredriver but the sound is amplified when you use something hollow to listen, just like Doctors stethiscope.

Found em, they were all under the shredded insulation leading to the edge of the roof.. I thought it weird but I know nothing of building houses..
