So I have this closet..IMG_20150814_132457.jpg

And I want to vent straight up into the attic..

I have a 6" hole saw and a stud finder, I guess I'm just a bit nervous.. Any pointers, advise, personal experience, etc. Would be greatly appreciated. Looking to get to work asap! I just really really don't want to fuck up my house, ya dig? Haha. bongsmilie

if your going to pump warm air into your attic you are going to create one warm attic and will attract unwanted attention not to mention the smell. why don't you just do an attic grow? and vent out the tiles with a carbon scrubber?

I run a 6" inline exhaust fan/6" ducting to my attic with no ill effects.

However put a pantyhose on each end, to stop the dust & other gremlins.

Without my carbon filter you can barely smell anything, vents well!

don't do it... unless you have exhaust fans at your gables and roof vents

You can create the prefect conditions for this...

Its just a closet grow and I don't live in a humid area at all. I have a couple of friends that I don't have contact with anymore that gave me this idea in the first place.. They never had one problem while I was around.

The lights that I use barely put out any heat and I do have exhaust from the the attic to outside of the roof so no worries there. I appreciate the advice, but I'm looking for pointers on moving forward, not discouragement. I do really appreciate your two cents tho. Thank you.

Did you use a hole saw to cut into the attic? how thick is your ceiling? any pics? :bigjoint:

I would use a 5" hole saw so it's a tight fit for the 6" ducting this will stop the ducting falling or moving about. Just put a pair of tights over the ends of the ducting and your good to go pal

im a grower not a smoker

I would do whatever you feel is best mate if you wanna vent into attic then vent into attic if you get busted for the heat then youll know not to vent into the attic next time I vent direct out via a vent

Mold is the primary concern. You don't have to be in a humid area. The plant produces humidity. You don't think all that water you give it stays in the plant do you?

No shit, Sherlock- I mean Jack... I have been doing this for a while and as I stated previously above, the attic is vented to the outside(of the house) via fan. This is the only attic that Ive vented into with the fluffy insulation.

There is very little heat from the COBs I have, and they are slightly under-driven as well. Heat will not be an issue until winter and that is plenty of time to route it into a bathroom fan, furnace exhaust etc..

I should have known not to comment on peoples negativity. The butt suckers always come in droves after that.. Rule #1: Trolls never have anything better to provide to the community.

This thread was a waste of my time and yours, sorry folks.

Thats what i do it helps to cool the attic and have never smelt anything outside.I trimmed the bottom of the door and raised the floor three inches to block the light, this allows plenty of air flow up the back side of the closet.Scrubbers or charcoal filters are a waste of electricity and cause premature failure of your in line fans.

I like the idea and have even thought of it myself. If you have a light in the closet that may be a 4" hole. Just remove the fixture and you can reroute the wire or just cap it off really good. Use a 4" step from your 6" duct. Just keep an eye out for the mold, but with proper ventilation you should fine especially with just a closet grow. I would also make sure you run you duct to the center of the attic. So the moisture isn't pushed straight into the wood. Let it all disperse into the air. If you don't have a light, just figure out where you want to put the hole then drill a small hole through and stick something up through it so you can find it from the attic. Then drill the larger hole next to a stud, so near the hole you put in from the closet so if you need to use the stud for support its there. Good luck.

Is the attic directly above the closet al?
If so then i would use a piece of that rigid aluminum duct to mark it out. Drill a small hole in the center to make sure you arent gonna hit any studs or anything.
Whichever duct u run u may want to strap it down or spray foam it in place to help keep it quiet.

Here is how you do it bro.... I have been a carpenter found over 16 years.... get your self a small drill bit where u want the hole.... drill the small hole.... take a hanger.... poke the hanger into the ceiling.... then go in the attic and make sure when u drill your big hole you are not going to hit a truss.... if u have to move the hole to avoid a truss do so.... hope this helps.... if you need more info msg me back....

Thanks guys. I'm going to get back up there in the morning and map out my plan. That coat hanger idea is genius and good looking out with the truss info

Poke a screwdriver through the ceiling from below where you want it

Go up there and clear the insulation from around where the screwdriver is poking through, and make sure there's nothing that you'll hit drilling

Cut your hole
