Mount the carbon filter to the fan and it sucking through the filter and blowing out of your grow room. Led's, from what I understand, run pretty cool, but you still need venting to replace the air the grow space. As long as your useing a carbon filter sized for your grow area, you can vent anywhere you want, odor won't be an issue. I definitly recommend getting a carbon filter, as even if you vent directly outdoors, it's probably not a good thing to have weed odor wafting around your house. A passive intake works good as long your openings are large enough to allow enough air flow. With a 4" inline, 2-3 openings with a size of 48 sq. (i.e. 4"x12", 6"x8") should be good. I'm no expert on this though, just going by what most grow tents have built in. If space inside your grow room is limited, you can also mount the fan/filter outside with the fan sucking from the grow room and blowing out through the carbon filter. What led lights do you have? In the future I would like to try to useing them, but I don't want to spend the money right now, since my hid is only around a year old.
Happy Growing.

thanks for the info. I am looking into 2 rhino grow leds.. or 2 240w blackstars. Im not really into LEDS over HPS but for heating and billing costs it works for me..

Cool, I'd be interested to see a grow journal of this. In my opinion, the Blackstars have a better range of spectra, but I'm no expert on leds.

i recommend doing the exhaust into your room, as long as you have a/c or some fans going outside to expel the temperatures, and getting some sort of fresh air intake (fresh air is the bestest for your buddies.) Dont forget a filter on your intake(panty hose/hepa/regular, not charcoal)! You will have way less dust and ect on your plants this way. Its just like how dust collects on picture frames n shit, you dont wanna smoke the dust :) also make sure your exhaust is more powerful than your intake.

yeah i dont even have an intake filter, but the thought came to me one day when i was thinking about how dust travels in the air. if using a good intake filter though youd need to make your grow cab air tight, so the dust wont come in through the cracks too
be weary of how the filters effect your CFM ratings on the fans, they also reduce lifetime and probably make em produce extra heat because its putting a load of your fan. also a passive intake would be great, i just think fresh air with a filter would be even better than taking your room air

For reference you want to be able to exhaust all of the air in your grow space in 5 minutes or less for the best circulation and to quickly remove odor. Also know that if your humidity is too high the carbon filter will lose efficiency.

if heat is not an issue can i get by with a smaller inline fan to use on the carbon scruber?

You want to replace the air in your room atleast every 3-5 min. 5x5x?7?=150 cu. ft. So yes a 4" fan/filter would work, but I think you would be better off getting a 6". You could also get a fan speed controller to slow it down and if you need more airflow, you'll have it. As Nizza said, your filter will cut your cfm's somewhat (figure about 20%) as well as any duct work you use and NEONKINEBUDZ makes a good point about humidity levels. Anything over 70% and efficiency is greatly reduced.
