Vent and Fan Help Please

I would please like to get some help from the riu community.

I have started to construct my grow area in my closet which has the following dimensions: height 7.6' x length 7' x depth 2'

My plan is to divide the space roughly in half and have the veg on the right side using a 400w MH on the bottom and then I have a shelf with a little clone box and a t5 fixture. On the left I will have the flower side with a digilux 600w HPS.

Pretty high up on the flower side I installed a shelf and then placed a goblin hydrohut 6" carbon filter and then connected a CAP ValuLine 6" 435 cfm exhaust fan (VLF-6) and ran 6" ducting out of that up through the ceiling and then connected it to the attic roof vent above.

The problem is, when I turned the fan on it was pretty loud. I dont have the wall space constructed to divide the spaces or the closet door put on but as is it is pretty loud. I closed the door to the room and stood in the hall and you can hear the fan. My friend helping me construct this grow space says he has an original Can-Fan and it is noticeably quieter than this fan that I have. I have seen the variable speed controllers for about 25$ but I'm wondering if I lose most of my cfm in order to get the noise down and it would be better to trade out the fan?

I called the store I purchased it from and they have Vortex 6" fans and can order a 6" Can-Fan (looks like its only 270 cfm for the regular CFN6 and then 440 cfm for the high output CFN6H). T

he guy at the store recommended a different fan made by a company called Elicent. The 6" is 309 cfm (736763) and says it has backward curved blades to ensure the lowest possible sound and to develop ample static pressure.

They are both the same price but I was wondering if I get any advice from the community on a fan that would be quiet enough to exhaust this space and keep the temps down. Thank you.

Oh ok, well heres how its mounted right now:

Can you or anyone please tell me how to change things to make it quieter? The fan is not attached to the carbon filter with a clamp its just shoved into it.

hang the fan from some bungy cords from the ceiling, or you can do what ive seen on other posts and treads is using car dynamat ( used for car stereos ). Think for a piece big enough and roller goes for around 40 bucks. hope it helps

I will attempt to mount the fan and filter vertically with bungees but if it comes down to purchasing something that is $40-$50 some dollars wouldn't it be better to just spend another $50 and get a quieter fan? The store said I can either exchange or return the one I have for roughly another 23 days.

It's hard enough to keep the heat down in space that size with one of the HID lights you mentioned. I would not put the two in that same space. Do you have another space you can use for veg.?

you can mount the fans on mouse pads or like you said get quieter ones. The clip on fans from holmes are pretty quiet.

the fan and filter set up I would keep in the same direction as the pic. Mount fan with rubber bushings or hang with bungee cords and eye screws as suggested. You can go to and auto parts store and buy shock bushing, install between fan bracket and celing. Make sure you can screw into a stud and use a couple of chains and hooks for the filter.

i was suggesting the dynamat to quite down whatever fan you choose to go with. Me personaly I have my ducting lines wrapped with insolation and I used a 10 dollar mattress topper to wrap around my fan to dim down the sound. Quite enough for me. There is many many things you can do

thank you joe dollar and sulldog, I will try more things to cut down the sound. You don't think the fan will be enough to cool the space? I was going to get some hurricane glass or a tube for the 600 digilux hps and then I have a little 4" booster I was going to attach onto the end and blow air over the bulb to cool it. I also have a desk fan I could put on the veg side and blow it at the 400 mh, it will be under a wing fixture.

The room volume would be 100 ft correct? (7.2'x7'x2') and a 435cfm fan would clear a 1300 ft room? (435x3) I understand the filter will restrict some of that air flow though

I went verticle with my fan. I suspended the Sunleaves (400+cfm) fan (plastic/quieter) below the ceiling tent vent. The muffle slides directly on top of the fan and it works sweet. I used a insulated clamp also. The mufflers are around $75...I could make it even quieter if I had used Thermo-flow insulated flexible ducting.

I used those long cable ties/zip ties to suspend the fan. Works fast, is cheap, and looks great.

well i attempted to mount it vertically from bungees, there was literally no change at all in the amount of noise this thing emits. I have the exhaust duct going up through the ceiling of the closet and then the duct goes up and to the attic vent, should I just move the fan up above the closet into the attic and then run the ducting down into the closet and connect it to the filter with more ducting? I noticed in the photo above my reply there is quite a bit of ducting between the filter and the light and then finally the fan..
