Vegging with HPS

Who uses HPS to veg? I have seen it talked about on here but can not find any results using the search function.

I am currently using a 70w HPS to veg 6 seedlings. I know the color spectrum is not the most idea, but are there any other drawbacks?

Kind of thinking about switching to 4 x 23w bright white CFL. Does anyone recommend this switch?

i used 250hps for my growth (both stages). it definitely worked in veg although im planning on purchasing metal halide for the veg stage of my next growth:twisted:

Keep the HPS and add the 6500k cfl's! You want some red/yellow light while vegging, just MORE blue light for better results. the more lumens, the better.

I know the HPS will work I just didn't know if there would be any issues such as the plants stretching more as they grow, longer veg time, etc...

I will be adding more light as these plants do grow, but I would like to keep it to a minimum in this early stage right now. Only 1 week out of the soil. I think I will just add the 4 x 23w CFL fixture a week or two down the line.

I do need to watch my heat since I am using a (somewhat large) closet... But with it being divided in half for both grow stages and 400w HPS in here already I don't have much room to work with. Until fall hits and the temps drop.

Even for 1" seedlings that are just starting to get their 2nd set of starter leaves? Thought this would be good until they are 3" or so tall.

Vegging with HPS works fine. MH is optimized for growing veg, but HPS does almost as well.

I'm using a 150W CFL (big sucker) for vegging small clones and seedlings and that's all I will ever use from now on. It promotes tons of branching and really compact growth. No heat issues and the plants can crowd around the light like 1" away without burning.
