Using plastic garbage bags as pots? (not growing bags)

as you wait around naked/ dressed in a trash bag for 65 days ....lol

I know of a guy who got his potting mix from the local parks, even shop display fronts are good

ask in those shop they often chuck out warehouse pots and swap into retail/fancy pots to sell flowers

If you look at the construction of a grow bag vs a regular garbage bag its different. Grow bags are white on the outside and black on the inside, and they have holes in them. And usually the grow bag is thicker. Exact mils' I'm not sure of but it seems thicker than the typical construction bag.

Another thing that is different is how the bag stands when full a 1 gallon grow bag stands differently, A 30 gallon smart pot stands way wider than tall.
cannabis doesn't root very deep so you really shouldn't use a bag that full. I think at best half would be ok. I am worried about it tipping over.
So my concern is the shape. Its not really right.

I'm sure it would work, but not ideal. I would rather use a burlap bag instead of a plastic trash bag, I dont have to poke holes in it, its stronger.. etc. etc.

Not sure if you can still get feed bags from farmers but that's what we used, lots were burlap back then lol.

All my grow bags are black in and out and I've never seen a white one TBH. Probably cause they would be like neon signs

You are right though burlap works great but given the opertunity roots like to go deep and the plant will get bigger, I've always cut the bottom of my outdoor bags once established to allow roots to go beyond the bag. And yup burlap won't stop the roots from going down, been there, done that lots lol.

+1 for the endorsement for burlap. You can get big ones for cheap. I think its a bit hard for the roots to get into compacted ground.. but if you put them on a tilled bed. I'm sure they will shoot into the ground.

Double bag it, and pull the sides down to make it shorter. It should hold up long enough for your plants to finish, but if you are worried about the bag breaking down, put it in something like burlap to block the sun.

Actually after they have sat for a month the earth underneath becomes somewhat soft where I am and yup the roots go right in

. I also tend to keep the same site so any dirt left in the bag stays there for next year. The roots in a pot plant are unstoppable bitches as I have found in my flood and drain set up lol. We actually sewed our own bags one year (pain in ass lol) out of garden burlap and the one draw back was water retention and they dried out fast which in a stealth grow is a bad thing. The grow bags were the best thing since sliced bread when we first started using them.

left over from last year.when I harvest I take top 2/3 leave rest.that bag gets dumped new goes right on top.cant tell in pic but that bag is sitting on at least 50 gal old pro mix,been working this swamp loooong time

I was mixing up a new batch of soil this week. I emptied a bag of peat moss and I thought about this thread. If I had a few thousand dollars to start a company, I would sell peat moss and potting soils in camo bags {inside and out}. You could advertise as having a ready made grow bag.

A friend of mine grows his tomatoes in the soil bags laying flat. He just pokes a few holes in the bottom, then cuts a big enough hole to transplant the plant into. Since weed roots grows out more than down, this looks like a good idea.

All my weed will be in the ground. I was just showing what could be done. I do run a few tomatoes in homemade growbags, but all of them are sitting in two inches of water.

I'm ok with using the bag that the dirt came in.. but for a compressed bale like Promix, prolly not a good idea.

If given the opportunity to, the roots do and will get quite long. The deeper the hole the taller the plant is what I have found with my outdoor grows. But we have rocks 6" down lol. We use bags

. I had a buddy basically air root a plant into a ground vine that was massive. He trained the stem to grow along the ground and would actually bury the stalk every couple of feet and it would root at each spot, pretty amazing.
