Using a UV filter to decrease algae buildup?

I was curious to know if anyone has tried to use a UV filter in their hydroponic setup. I have an older one I was using on my 150 gallon. It seems to do the job in there so why not in a reservoir?

afaik UV light can kill living organisms. Your roots are living orgaisms, it may kill your roots.

If your not having a problem with alge why put it in your res? Just keep the light out and you should be fine
