Using 400 watt HID to start seedlings?

Would it be OK to use a 400 watt HPS lamp to start seedlings? - (If this is the only lamp available?) - Thanks.

I had no problems, I had a few plants under my 400w, threw some seeds in and they are going great, just dont have your light too close.

Seedlings 18-36" away

...suppose it would be cheaper (electric bill) to use something less powerful for this first stage; but if not, will defiantly keep it at least that far away - Thanks!

I 12/12 from seed with my 400w and spend less than 20$ extra on my bill.

Wow; did not realize it would be that cheap; excellent. I thought 18/6 throughout veg stage - then 12/12 for flowering. But you do 12/12 throughout entire grow? This works OK?

If you 12/12 from seed, you will have a MUCH smaller plant with MUCH LESS BUD to smoke.
There is a good reason for 18/6 veg....
