I'm in the woods too, but no ticks here that I know of. Maybe it's the altitude here in CO. I never got a tick once living in the Western WA woods and that's where my friends and I would spend most of our time. CA was the first time I got one, but they weren't bad there.
I live upstate NY, we get deer ticks that will kill you. From Lyme disease that makes you wished you were dead, to a type of blood disorder that Will Kill you. Forget the name of that one off hand. I try not to think about it, while at the same time, continuously checking myself.
We also get the more common "dog tick" but those don't carry Lyme, but, they might carry the other Sporalis parasite that will kill you. (Not sure about that one)
It's especially fun in the spring time when the news media feels the need to warn everyone with pictures of ticks that it's "Tick season"...
Which itself is misinformation because ticks live year 'round and sometimes will "hole up" in people's houses and wonder how they got a tick bite in the winter time. IF you get any of those warmer days where the snow melts, look around, am sure you will find some in the leaf litter just waiting to latch on to something to feed.
Read somewhere that in Russia they had a tick that lived 25 years in a log cabin in Siberia even in the harshest winters. So even that's an old wives tail, as I was told when I was a kid that "we need those -20 winter temps to kill off all the ticks..."
So instead of relying on winter time cold, I make sure to spray my cabin once a year with stuff that kills ticks....... and other things like carpenter ants, termites, etc.
The one thing we haven't had around here in decades and decades, and in those decades ticks have become more and more prevalent, is FOREST FIRES that burn the forest floor, killing all the ticks..... NY used to get forest fires all the time.... We haven't had one in 60 years I bet....
I myself have never had a tick on me, my dog has had a couple and she has arthritis at 6, which isn't good for a German Shep, but she manages. I have to get her vaccinated for lyme every year. Awesome that we're on this conversation as it reminded me that I have to get a tick collar for my dog. THANKS!!!
