URGENT Severe Weather Issue

wouldn't the logical answer be just bringing the plants inside, i'm sure a storm or hurricane is alot worse than bringing them indoors for a hours/days.

ROLF... buckets with rocks to hold them down..... HAHAHAHA... that's a good one!!!

Obviously you've never been through a hurricane... or tropical storm. After hurricane Ivan our roadways were littered with boats that the storm had picked up and thrown about.... I even had one land on my front porch.

Even Tropical Storm force winds would easily knock buckets over (even with rocks on them) and possibly damage the plants in the process. I'm not trying to be critical.... I came from CA.... and had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what I was in for during my first hurricane

If the plants are in pots then your best bet is moving them indoors until the storm passes. If they are in the ground then there is really little you can do to protect them... they are in mother nature's hands :)
yea i got japanese knot weed surround both sides, they are probably a good ten feet tall, a fence ten feet behind them, and then the wood pile is right up in front of them, sufficient?
FlaGirl, thats hilarious. I was born and raised in Key West. Obviously some of these guys have never been thru a tropical depression, let alone a hurricane. I was at ground zero for Andrew (That threw the fear of god into me), and several others. A hurricane aint no joke!!!

Dude with the plants, if you've got a decent wind break, about all you can do is leave 'em where they are and pray. They'll probably be fine. Or you could dig 'em up, bring 'em inside, and re-plant 'em afterwards.

Sounds like you already have a good natural windbreak, if you are still worried, you could TRY and make one out of some 4x4 and plywood (Kinda like a leanto) something to direct the wind up and over the plants, but you better make sure it's stout. A strong tropical storm can uproot huge trees. But then, a huge tree has alot more wind resistance that your plants. The torrential rain will probably do more damage than the wind. If they are healthy and strong you should be fine. They shouldn't have alot of wind resistance.

because you can go years with out being majorly effected by one and then boom all of your possessions can be sitting in 4 to 8 ft (maybe even more depending on storm surge) of dirty water pretty much everything is ruined.

yea i'm pretty sure i got the wind knocked down for the storm, i put down some tarps and flag stone along with some cinderblocks to shed as much water as possible away from the plants to prevent them from drowning, they are very healthy and strong, i'll be keeping a close eye on them during the storm in case anything needs to be done

I grew up with Hurricanes, and the threat of them. Dude, after surviving Andrew, If I didn't evacuate, I'd not stick my nose out the door until it was over. We used to scoff at hurricanes. Andrew put the fear of god in me. I was onboard my boat out at anchor (Dinner Key) during the storm, and when all was said and done, I was in the marina shower facility (No roof), and my boat was sticking out of the second story of the Miami City Gov't Center!!! Do not fuck around if its a Cat 3 or better!!!

PLEASE keep us posted. Post pics of them after the blow if you can!! I'd be intersted to see them.

i grabbed my biggest and strongest tarp i could find in the house, i anchored the bitch down using concrete blocks on one side and tied the other side of the tarp up into the tree's, the tarp has a good two feet above the plants and i angled the tarp to aim the water run off away from the plants, i'll post again in the morning, the worst is suppose to hit tommorow night so that will be the test

If you're in an area that's really going to get hit hard I wouldn't have even put a tarp down or bricks or whatever those could just end up being projectiles that tear up your plants.

I think it's funny those guys that suggested putting a tent over them, or buckets. That wouldn't work out so good to say the least even if they were small enough.

Good luck... These are the risks you take, but yes that sucks and I hope it works out. I would just be out there picking up anything around that area that could end up flying into them and tearing them apart but still it probably wouldn't matter stuff can fly in from miles away.

Fingers crossed for you...

hahahahaha, funny shit, but the babies survived the first wave of hard rain from last night, they are still dry as a bone under there and the tarps i put down on the ground shed all the rain water away,

It's all good guys, my girls are in perfect condition, no harm what so ever, they stood up to the wind and rain with no problems, by putting that tarp up they were unaffected by hannah. i'll have pics as soon as i can, my sister has the camera so when she gets home later i'll post pics
