Unsure about cause of leaf damage.

Hi all.

Been reading this site for a while and recently started my own grow. It's 3 weeks in and everything is going fine apart from the bottom leaves.

I've searched and looked at a lot of pics and think the problem is either nitrogen def. or nute burn.

I'm growing in John Innes No.1 at the moment, I have some fish blood and bone powder (was going to mix with water next time they were watered).

This is the worst leaf that is affected, most others are a light green/pale yellow colour.


Can anyone provide further help? Would mixing FBB with my next water be beneficial or another solution?

Whats the N-P-K of that soil?

MJ plants like a lot of Magnesium (it's what allows them to take up N and make them green). It may be a lock out of some description as they seem qute young to be loosing colour like that. As JointQ said, check whats in your soil and provide an update on that. It may be it just needs som Cal-Mag or something. Check ph if you can as well. Don't start adding things to it until you are fairly certain what may have caused the issue. Also check if the plant is root bound (the pot looks quite small). Just a few things I would do when analzying issues.

I've checked the bag and used trusty google and can't find the npk, it only says it has them.

The pots are 6" just been reported into 4-5 days ago. The roots are through the bottom holes already though :/ but I wouldn't har thought it would be a problem already. I am buying bigger plants today regardless before adding all sorts. Just eager to sort the problem as the other higher leaves are showing yellow/light green tips now.

i would check the pH if possible, thats pretty important for the uptake of nutrients

Hi MJ71 thanks for the reply, just done a PH test on the water I was using and it was WAY too acidic. I was using bottled water of 7.4 and adding a couple of drops of lemon juice per bottle which turned my tester very very red! Going to do a flush on the plants now and see what the outcome is. How long do you think it would take to start seeing results if this is the problem?

Most bags that do not have the actual numbers tend to have web sites where you can get more info. Don't google the product, google the manufacturer.


Just flushing, if you believe the problm is caused by ph does not really do much. Flushing can remove a buildup of ferts but if the soil has slow release nutes pre mixed, flushing may just release more nutes. Check some of the garden sites for info on using epsom salts, not RIU. As DST said MJ loves Mag. Epsom salt supplies some mag, helps keep the green in the leaves and it tends to condition to roots for better uptake of nutes. I believe making sure you have correct ph and a light feed with epsom salts would be better that a blind flush. Before you flush ask your self what it is going to do.

agreed ^ and i would go get yourself pH up and pH down, so you dont have any future problems with lemon juice and probably anywhere from 5 to 10 days you should see some change, whether it be good or bad..

Just an update...and this is weird!

Irst off I started picking the dead leaves off my plants, I have 5 Superbud and 1 kandy kush. Watered them with correct ph water, the kandy kush reacted to this fine and no problems have shown at all.

The others made no improvement so I bought some tomato feed, Epsom salt and fb&b mix. I flushed 1 which worked for that plant, fed 2 with 1/2 strength t-feed which worked on 1 but not the other, so I used Epsom salts on this and that then worked. and used a sprinkle Of fb&b on the last 2 which also worked!

I'm guessing it was a mag def. for the 5 Superbud simply because mag was in all products that seemed to work!!

For me, 1 capful of white distilled vinegar per liter of water brings mine down from 7.8 to 6.8.

Magnesium,needs some

So it's been over a week now and since sorting the ph and magnesium in my plant pots everything is great. It's week 5 since popping out of the soil to the day and they're looking healthy and bushy. I have pics but I'm gona wait til the end to upload.

Ive super cropped twice and fimmed once, although I think I done it wrong and topped by mistake :/ oh well live and learn. Still they're all around 10" tall which isn't bad for 5 weeks I'd say! Also to add I've got them under 240w LED.
