Trouble with Seedlings

First post guys, hope not the last.

I've read 3 books and all the internet info I could get my hands on, and went to grow. Germinated some seeds and planted, and only 3 grew into seedlings.

About a week in, the largest plant was doing very well so I transplanted to a larger container (even though I should have waited)

It was standing about 8", although very flimsy but the first leaves grew from the catelyons, and then began to rise from them. Its hard to know what I mean since I didn't take a picture before I removed it, but for some reason it didn't grow like others I have seen on this and other sites.

Basically it looked like this:

======

< >

With the < > as the catelyons, and ======= as the true leaves when I thought it was supposed to be:

======
< >

I planted it with miracle grow potting soil, and I'm thinking the fertilizer was soon much (15-9-15). This next grow I have already bought vermiculite and no-fert added potting soil, and am doing a 1/3 ratio. I watered enough to keep soil from drying out and kept under a 120w agrolite for 14-16 hours a day. One thing I noticed that may have affected this is my temperature ran at continuously 80-85 degrees with the light running, and I have read that took much heat can lead to stem-stretching.

Any ideas why it didn't work the first time and how to make it better the second?

Thanks.

Might I add that when I pulled the plant it was 2 years old and healthy, just only the same two small leaves and when I removed soil the root (single) was small but long, yet nothing but one.

Just read some more (which isn't included in any book I have read, just on the forums), and saw that if the lights not close enough it will stretch. GOTCHA.
