Trimming vs lollipopping - what's the deal?

Some say don't trim any lower branches or fan leaves. others lollipop which seems the extreme form of trimming. Who is an advocate of one or the other, and how do you go about it? Isn't there anything in between?

Lollipopping? Is that like when you cut all the fan leaves off right before you cut the plant down?

Who in their right mind would do that at any other time?

You lollipop by removing all branches from the bottom 1/3 of your plant. You do this at about week 3 of flower. You do it to make the plant re-focus growth hormones into the existing budsites, thus making them bigger than normally would happen. Your final weight will be about the same - but it's more about getting bigger buds instead of the popcorn shit.

This is beneficial on several different levels. You are growing indoors, and your light won't penetrate the lower foliage. Light makes bud.. the budsites that are exposed to direct light grow better.
This is the same logic behind people trimming a few fan leaves. This is a huge subject of debate among growers. Ed Rosenthall advocates removing fan leaves that are blocking budsites from light. It's generally accepted (even amongst the "don't trim anything" guys) to tuck fan leaves out of the way to allow light to hit budsites is better than trimming them, but beneficial.

The difference is when you remove fan leaves, the only thing you are re-focusing is the plant's energy, re-growing leaves. When you remove the branch, it doens't re-grow the branch it will focus on it's already developed bud sites.

If you need further clarification, I'll go into detail for you, I'm late for 4:20 and wanna grab the bong.. lollipoping doens't (in my experience) equate into more bud weight, it works out to about the same, the difference is you don't have the little popcorn crap to trim.

Great explanation.

I believe this is what you are talking about and it is sexy as hell to me. I imagine it has to make the buds develop better without anything else sucking the good juices away from them.
As to me! Awesome work man!

So say I remove the lower branches and plant them so that the bud still grows along side my newly trimmed plant, I should in fact double my yield, no?

I lolli pop to maximize yield per sq/ft. I fit 72 of them on a 4x8 table under 3 1K lights, for about 7 lbs or better. I doubt you'd double your yield with just a few.

JESUS CHRIST, JACK!

So, you cut everything but the main cola just before flipping to 12/12?

Today is my third week flower. Is it too late to trim up the bottom?

CB, no, It's not too late. How many you got? Remember, It's a numbers game. You might wanna try just 1 or 2, to compare the yields. Take off everything up to the main. Really, if you have like 5 or 6 girls, I'd only chop 1 until you see if it's worth it. I do it because I pack a shitload of them (72) on a table, sort of like a SOG/SCROG.

Then, make the cuttings into clones, veg them while the others are flowering, and trim them up just before you harvest, then start the process over. It's a nice rotating crop kinda thing.

Thanks all! Do you all agree that 3 weeks into 12/12 is the right time to trim the bottom 1/3? Does it matter how long they veg'd first?
