Trimming my plants?

My friend told me that it is best to pull off all of the large leaves to focus more of the nutrients to the growing part of the plants. It seems to me that you give up a lot of surface area for the light absorption though. Does it make sense to do this?

depends on the plant, if you have a tiny plant with 4 fan leaves than, all you will be doing is killing it, if it is a descent size plant, then trim some of the leaves off just the ones blocking light and lower leaves that are receiving little to no light. pics and setup description wold help greatly also hit up the search engine, peace

I would also add to this that bending and tieing back the leaves is effective yet time consuming, this would save the leaf and its goodness.
