Trimming lower leafs on stem

i saw on canabis planet that you should trim the really small leafs and growth at the bottom of the stems so you force the plant to use its energy to produce new growth on the top of the plant and not use energy to produce small growth thats not going to produce any real buds is this a good practice. has anyone had better growth after doing this?

on my current grow i cut off the first set of branches as the light cant get through to them, i just done it without looking into it, so im not sure if it was wise or not, but no harm seems to have been done, some people will tell you not to cut anything but others will tell you to chop away, your best just to try it and if it does not work for you then you know not to do it again in future, its all trial and error in my eyes lol
