Sure thing... Happy to help. In your post at the top of this thread, look at your 3rd pic. There you'll see some shriveled, dead leaves. This is the classic sign of bud rot. Also, the top of that same bud has some dirty, crumbly looking stuff on top. To me, this looks like the tip of that bud has been removed, but some debris has been left behind.

Do you have a local Hydro Shop in your area? Stop in and see if they have some Actinovate like I mentioned before. It really works wonders overnight. Also, I feel it's a bit early to hit the panic button and harvest this early. Regardless of whether you choose to spray or not, be sure to remove ALL of that particular bud from your garden. Be sure to pick up ALL of the debris related to this bud, even off of the ground or wherever these leaves and crumbs have fallen. If you do a good clean up job, and watch things closely, you should have no problems waiting for your buds to fully mature before harvesting them.

When you see sugar leaves turn brown for no apparent reason, it's bud rot. Pull the leaf out and you'll see the white / gray fuzz that is mold. At first glance it can be hard to tell the difference between mold and trichomes, but eventually it becomes second nature.

Rot starts from the inside out so you have to look further in than the surface.

i just examined 2 dozen colas and saw no others like this one. and that tip bud in pic 3 is the very one that i sliced in half, and i saw nothing in there but did you? i really think that brown leaf was the result of that bud and another one getting hit too many times as i try to slip past it, it grows out into the aisle. all sugar leaves are healthy green - here are just a few very at random shots - notice on one bud there is one lobe shriveled on a lower leaf - the stem was still very solidly locked in and has a solid stem, i saw this on one other bud as well - the leaf had a stem firmly attached and only one lobe of 5 was shriveled. and this is only 2 of about 100 colas i looked at (in the midst of writing this i have made 3 trips... ;-) ). i would think a systemic problem would show on more????

and finally, here is that bud tip with the leaf that had one shriveled lobe sliced in half, all is green and lush to me.... ?? the chunk in the upper right is showing nothing but insides, like looking at the sliced side of an apple, total insides exposed

@surfgeo I absolutely agree with ur assessments. I saw nothing more in ur pics that would indicate the mold was deep inside. By all accounts it DID look like botrytis, and going on everything U've provided, I believe U've "nipped it in the bud" so to speak. Now that U know what to lookout for, keep a sharp eye out for anything looking like this, and I think U'll be fine until harvest time. I know so many people who were not as fortunate as U and have lost most of their crop.

U R doing things just fine... :peace:

THANK YOU- your explanation was most helpful and i definitely know what to look for now. i am curious though why more people dont screen for mold with uv, especially after cleaving a bud in half to expose everything. i had a few scares though because i went through and trimmed the tips of a lot of leaves to give the plant a bit less of an obvious look, and a few leaves fell on lower colas and dried up so at first glance it looked just like botrytis, until i pulled the leaf and realized it was never attached to that bud. whew!

one thing i just want to confirm in my own head - IF there was really an issue with botrytis, would it indeed be early diagnosed by slicing the bud in half vertically? makes sense to me, but i have seen nothing in my interwebs reading about this.

If I may clarify... Because your case of botrytis was from the outside in, it is far less likely to have as many spores spreading around. What I'm driving at is the fact that, when it's deep in the under layers of the bud, it thrives and grows undetected for quite a while. This is how it propagates into such large numbers that it becomes so much harder to get under control. In your situation, it's out in the sunlight and the fresh air, slowing it down and giving U the opportunity to intervene before it gets out of hand. So yes, cutting open that bud like you did proved it was on the outside of the bud and less worrisome than if it was deep inside the bud.

It's a numbers game. If the bad guys are allowed to multiply into great numbers before being discovered, "they" have a stronger chance of survival and beating our attempts at eradicating the infestation.
