Trichome Checking with USB Microscope

Hey guys!
Last question for the day, I have searched and it didn't yield many results. So i apologize for my bad searching =(

So how do you guys check your trichomes, with your microscope, digital or analog?

I have tried to use it on the plant with bringing my laptop in close, it is WAY to hard to focus and try to grab a pic... Are you guys mounting your usb to the side of the pot or something?

~OR~ or you sneaky guys, taking a little clipping from the plant and putting it under the microscope.

SO IN FINAL
-Where should you be checking the trichomes?
-What is the best place to clip a sample or?
-What indicators on the plant, are tell tale signs that I should START to check them *(I know i read this answer today but this pneumonia is kicking my butt)

we have a USB microscope but we use the 20x/40x loupe much more often.
The 150x USB microscope takes pics, so it's excellent to show off your trichromes but other than that the loupes are more usable.

-check your trichromes everywhere you plan on smoking
-anywhere/everywhere you plan on smoking
-buds starting to get close to maturity (other words, weeks before you really need to, as it's fun as hell to watch them mature)

Think its safe to clip a sugar leaf once in a while at the end to check them under the microscope, once the loupe indicates that the time is getting close.
