Gen Y too lazy and unfocused to hire - bosses

Some employers say workers in their 20s have no work ethic and spend too much time talking to friends in work hours / File

  • Gen Y being spurned by employers
  • Accused of being lazy
  • Warned they have been spoilt

EMPLOYERS are refusing to hire Generation Y workers because they lack a work ethic and spend too much time talking to friends in work hours.

"Employers come to us about Gen Y, saying they're looking for a staff member but they don't want anyone in that 20s age bracket because they find they don't understand common courtesy in the workplace," Kristy-Lee Johnston, director of Footprint Recruitment told The Courier-Mail.
And the complaints don't only come from managers and bosses.
Social researcher Mark McCrindle said: "They also come from other people in the team who are of another generation."
Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland policy general manager Nick Behrens said the global financial crisis should act as a wake-up call.

"The chamber is hoping Gen Y will learn from this, that they can no longer take for granted the good times and will no longer get away with the luxuries they have been given."

Totally agreed... kids these days are LAZY, want mommy/daddy to pay for crap, etc...

I've worked since I was 15, and from 15-23, I bet you I've only missed about 4 days of work due to extraneous circumstances.

So pretty much, the older generations are just discriminating against Gen-Y's? Gen-Y's are going to be the generation that legalizes marijuana and finally decides to do something against our corrupt governments, or atleast try to.

Not discriminating.... more like disappointed....frustration. Basic skills are missing....basic attitudes are missing. Your post is a great example of not being able to comprehend what you're reading.

They're not even looking at people who apply for jobs in their 20s. I'd say that's more discrimination than disappointment.

And if I wasn't able to comprehend the post, I guarantee that's because of the weed, not when I was born, lol.

Hey man! Yeah I still got your number, I meant to give ya a ring on my way through Canada but I was too drawn in with the 4000+ miles of driving through the most beautiful terrain on our planet, with my father beside me to boot, great time! After I'm out of college I'll be headed back up and I think I just might drive it again, this time in summer though, having only 20% of the gas stations open during winter gave me some close calls with fuel being low on the Alaskan hwy; NOT a situation I wanna get into again.

LOL! Here's my phone: Gangsta stylish... and NO apps, that's right... still rockin' a FLIP PHONE!

They're looking at them ... and they don't like what they see.

That's not discrimination, but all hiring gets down to COMPETITION. lacking the basic skills is a guarantee for a dismal career.

most dudes my age Iv worked with suck. Lazy unreliable ass-hats that work "full time"(except Friday and Monday) and live with there parents. maybe if they had the balls to move out they would understand why you gotta show up. Also these dudes that I worked with were so fucking lazy that my supervisors gave up on them doing anything and as a hardworking guy I got shat on with there workload. /end rant

lolz. this whole post was funny. and the signature.

im in my early 20s and I've always had great work etiquette and followed the rules to get the job done. We all have our moments sometimes. Alas, if you are older, you can't afford those moments, so we understand. :joint:

I hear ya, without getting smacked first! If I were a boss I would be less likely to hire 20's as well but would probably have to. So if I did It would be policy, put up or get out. Lead by example. If your boss allows you to text msg when at work why not text. I'm 32 and have yet to have a cell phone that people know about, they are nice to call out on/emergencies.

The general indication is that gen Y is not able to fill the shoes of the current work force.

But you go ahead and deflect away.... that'll help.
