I would clean the buckets w/ hydrogen peroxide first just to make sure you don't have any contaminants (bugs, larva) shit like thatbut I'm waiting on my 3 gallon pots and ocean forest as well so I'm curious to any other recommendations people have to. Youre smart to transplant now and not wait to long for me.

Cleaning those buckets is a must!! If you're going to add anything to ocean forest, I'd add some perlite for drainage, esp in a 5 gal. Its not a HUGE requirement though. Punch some drainage holes in the bottom of those bad boys for sure tho.

I use a mix of 2 bags FFOF to one bale of Pro Mix peat moss and that works pretty well for me. You should be able to fill about ten 5 gallon buckets. I also add a few cups of lime to the mix as well to keep PH in check.

Where do u get lime at just any garden store? And also what do u use to check the ph in dirt strips or drops?

I use dolomite garden lime that I bought at Home Depot ( $3. for a 25lb bag). I mix my soil in a large clean trash can (used just for soil) and add about a few cups and mix it in.

With that mix I haven't bothered checking soil PH in 4 or 5 grows without any problems. The only PH problem I had is when I worried about it and tried to correct it. Some people disagree but it works for me.

I also use the Fox Farm trio (Grow Big, Big Bloom and Tiger Bloom) with molasses every other watering.

Check out my current grow and you can see that this mix works for me...

ok so i went to home depot i didnt find the bag you where talkin about but i got a 3lb bag for about 10 bucks its organic garden lime and i put 4 tbsp in each 5 gallon bucket i only had one bag of ff soil so i could only fill about 4 buckets 3/4 of the way to the top i transplanted the 4 seedlings that had the roots growing out of the bottom of the soil medium and i watered thoroghly in the buckets, does this sound right???

a couple inches of pea gravel at the bottom is always a good idea, and holes for drainage. my daddy taught me to put the holes in the sides of the bucket down at the very very bottom to let the excess water drain easier, and it keeps those little bottom roots that do make it through from composting in swamp water underneath a bucket.
