They need to be transplanted when you can see roots poking out the holes of the cup. Another way, if you were tocover the plant with it's current pot (or solo cup), does it fill the pot. Obviously this isnt an exact science, but you dont want to put them in pots that are too big either or it will take them forever to dry out. Just cut the sides of the cup to remove them, just make sure you let them dry out a bit first. It will make them easier to handle. When you pull the plant out, the roots should fill the cup 80-100% by sight. I make my own dirt, but if I was gonna buy dirt, I would buy the Roots Organic soil. It has a ton of good stuff and the most perlite of any bagged soil.

I'd keep it to that smart pot thread if I were you, you already got people posting in it, and it crowds up RIU less.

that said, is there a way you could upload some pics? even crappy ones, if they show the whole plant and the solo cup might give most people a good idea of where its at
I've read some people say to transplant when they're as tall as the container, but of course, that's assuming they're growing nice and bushy with close internodal spacing

foxfarm ocean forest (you read it abbreviated as FFOF a lot), is a pretty good soil, though it might have a lot of nutrients for younger plants to get used to, a lot of people, some real life friends of mine included, mix foxfarm ocean forest and foxfarm happy frog, which is really light on the nutes.

My choice for soil would be roots organic, but I'm using some stuff called "batch 64 moonshine" I dunno if you can get it in california.

I'm sure there's a lot of stuff in california that's great to use, pop into a grow shop and ask an employee, they're typically very pricey about a lot of things, but most of the things they overprice are things you can buy online. My soil is like $22 for a big 60 quart bag at the shop, I'm pretty sure most other soils were less expensive
