Tore a stem off and it got dirt where I tore

I tore a stem off a plant I have in soil trying to determine if it’s alive. The stem tore down the main stalk and made a open area on the main stalk. Some soil on on to the area of the stalk that has open area now. Would this cause any problems? Haven’t kept plants in soil in years and I’m having a hard time with it. I’ve accidentally overwatered 2 mother plants and killed them. Very frustrating
