Topping

Hi All,

I have a small grow space height-wise (Aprox 4 feet) and that is including my light which takes up some space. Anyway I have heard that to keep plants to a smaller height it is best to top them. This is my first grow and I want to make sure I do not mess anything up. I have been referred on here to Unlce Ben's topping guide but I still have some questions.

1) When should I begin to think about topping the plant?

2) Where exactly do I top the plant off? Is it the main stalk that I am supposed to pinch off??

You should top no sooner than 3rd week of veg, when a plant develops let's say 4th node of leaves. Pinch off the newest top growth and be careful not to damage the adjacent tiny side shoots. They will eventually become your 2 new main colas (unless you top em again later). Hope that helped!

1 you're going to get numerous opinions on where to top as far as which node to top at. I wait tip they get bout 6or7 nodes then go down2 and top. Some may say that's right some may say wrong. Its just something you'll have to find out by doing it riff ways which you like best.
Just remember that depending on the strain most plants will at least double in height when you go to flower its called the stretch. I have1 that almost tripled in height and it was topped.
IMO that is going to be you're deciding factor. There are also some great posts on here about LST which from what I've read is a better way to control the height of your girls.

I like to top after the plant has at least 4 or 5 nodes. Here are some pics of how to top or fim. I like to fim!
