yo lazy, did you notice any problems with slow growth when topping? Also, how many times do you top the main stem before you let it heal? I'm still reading on that :)

No m8, none of my plants has slowed growth after topping, unless ofc you mean upward growth, which is slowed only by the fact that you have smaller - younger shoots trying to take the place of the main shoot you just cut.

nice stoned rooster mgw. well I've heard that you can get many colas, up to 8 with FIM, but I also heard cases about topping where the same thing happened. Anyway, I think after this thread I'll make another pool with many more options, and also I will explain what everything means.. hopefully it will be good insight. but first I have to learn this myself :D

use all methods early in veg, top it, do some LST on some lower branches, then fim the new growth tips early in veg, the shock isnt to bad, it doesnt stunt the growth to much, maybe 2 days then off she goes again, its all a personal preference, outdoor i believe is best to let thrive on its own, when space requirments are tight and your doing a scrog/sog then obviously some control over its development and growth is required, just like your controlling its enviroment, you control its growth and shape etc.....

DSC00857.JPGI had these plants that grew without topping them.DSC00855.JPGThese are 35 days old. Some strains need topping if want to grow bushy and others seem do do it on there own.

i topped every new node on one plant i had just to see what happened. wasn't a very desirable effect though. plants branches just became thin and fell over

OK guys.. so as LST won, please check my signature to see what I did for my first LST. Hope to do it right.

abluntaday there is heaps of info to find on RIU on both subjects. Basically Topping means that you remove the top of your plant so that it generates more colas, and LST (low stress training) means that you tie the plant down so that you give it as much light as possible. I hope I was clear on this, I'm baked as fuck :D Anyway, check my signature, would love to see what you all think

I dont know all of the science of it, there's a thread buried in the advanced section about this, but with lst, you actually make more main colas, not just better growth... something to do with the natural growth hormones in the plant going to the tallest/main bud, and by making them all around the same height kinda makes the plant think it has more than one main bud... I'm gonna go try to find some real info on this before i get called on bullshit :)

good gogrow please keep me updated with what you find. I'm interested in this... minimise space > maximise yields science :)

It depends on the strain and what you want to do. If you grow big bud/chronic/critical etc topping is a bad idea. If you grow Herer, blueberry, blue mystic, NL#5 etc topping makes a lot of sense. If want a controlled canopy or have few plants, top and LST. LST is great for Sativa doms because they are much more bendable than most Indicas and grow tall. I can grow just about any strain in the same grow area by knowing the way the plants grow. For instance, one chronic I pinch the stem to control growth since topping is bad and LSTing defeats the purpose of the desired huge main cola, the others I top, the SSH I top and LST, a Thai pure haze I LST by bending the whole thing it at 90 degrees and have to wait two entire grow periods to harvest. Topping makes it much much easier to LST. Some plants Bush out on their own, especially after a good long veg in this instance it's great to do nothing or LST if it gets too tall.

It's also hugely dependant on the light being used. Say you're growing NL#5 I can almost guaranty that if you are growing one or two plants under a 400 watt it's better to top and lst because of the bad light penetration, making the canopy more even over say a 3x4 foot area, with better results concerning yeild. With 600/1000 watters light penetration is sufficient to grow large natural plants with obvious great success.

Now if you are talking about the difference in yeild over just topping a plant and letting it grow naturally most plant arent going to show much difference in yield and many would yield more naturally, unless it's lineage is like blueberry, or blueberry pheno dominant. Now if you veg 3 weeks, top, veg for another 3 weeks and lst it's a safe bet that this would yield much more than natural depending on the strain.

I voted Natural because its the only thing ive tried, but im going to try LST in the future though.
