Topping mother plants?

I was wondering if it is better to top a plant intended to be a mother for clones. I have read by topping you can create more areas to take cuttings.

you can get more clones that way, although topping is kind of intended for flowering...

Instead of 1 shoot growing up, when you top, you will have 2 but like the previous post says topping is better when flowering. I topped 2 plants in veg and now am flowering and the 2 branches are over a foot and a half and the plants total height is about 4 foot, I wanted to keep them kinda short so I f*&^ed up.
