is topping a 2ftx4ft sea-of-green a good idea? why or why not? any recommended methods of boosting the amount of yield?

If you topped you wouldn't technically have a SOG anymore. The purpose of a SOG (at least in my understanding) is to increase the yield over a period of time - maximum plants, minimal veg time, more frequent harvests. Topping means more veg time, kind of defeating the purpose of a SOG.

If you have enough room to top, that means you got room for more plants. Instead of one plant with six colas you have six plants with one cola each and you saved time growing those six plants. So if you want to increase yield at a particular point in time in a SOG and you have the room to do it then add more plants.
