Topdress with sand?

Had fungus gnats, so I am reading and reading....
There are lots of posts regarding topdressing with a layer of sand to help fight off fungus gnats.

So, I go out and get some washed playsand from the local store and on the bag it says "use for pavers, playgrounds and gardening.
well, I get home and put a good 2" on top of the old pots and I am good to go right?

Today, I am inspecting the girls for spider mites (just to be on the safe side) and I see a shitload of these little granules on the leaves.

Is it just me or did I make a HUGE mistake?
aint no way I wanna be smokin silica granules and that sand says its 80% silica!! WTF

So, since that shits clearly not good for ya why is there a chitload of threads of using it in your soil mix for super soils?

Am I over reacting or what?

Chemicals that kill gnats and yellow strips will get rid of them. No use top dressing with sand most gnats come out of the bottom drain holes.

H2O2 will kill the surface isues of your plants, so unless you are doing organic, keep a bottle of H2O2 around with a spray mist top...

I have found when grow room goes above 86 degrees the little critters start to hatch, so I try to keep the room under 85...

And I thought Sand was reported to wear a dress... not today...

To be honest having a soil grow without gnats is a rare thing. Keeping them under control is fairly easy. For plants growing a normal indoor cycle sticky strips or hot shot no pest strips will work great for gnats and other pests too. The only time IMO tht u need to be seriously concerned with gnats is if keeping mother plants alive for long periods of time. Also i preventatively spray my ladies with azamax once a week. If ur considering pesticides i would suggest u look at azamax its great stuff bro. Hope this helps a little

sand keeps them from laying eggs on top of soil it does work buds is right they will just move to drain holes so i put sand in drain tray and if there are alot of adults i pray with garden safe brand fruit and veg insect killer and neem oil soil drench.

Lol @ sand4x105
ok so thanks for the info on protecting the girls but now I am faced with the 2" of sand in the pots.
So I take it out and risk of further contamination or do I just cover up the sand with a cloth or something?
OR am I just over reacting?
The girls are doing ok but i am gonna have to make a move soon if I am gonna

If you want to do it that way get a pantyhose stocking and wrap the whole pot in it tie around the stem, take off the stocking when watering. And yes dont steal your wife's go and buy your own from the shop and tell them you relax in womens clothing if they ask wtf your doing.
